Wall Of Sound vs Errr....Chipmunk Rock??

Ok, I know this will sound crazy but is Kanye West the Phil Spector of our time? Wall of sound was THEE sound of the 60's and 70's right? Isn't Kanye West's production sound a more updated version of Phil's? I know it sounds kooky but does anyone agree?? This could be an interesting discussion topic. biggrin

he kinda sounds like an amalgamation of p.diddy and neptunes to me, based on what little i've heard. spector was more lush - sometimes too lush (for example, the 'let it be' album was considered way too produced by some of the beatles). is a lot of kanye's stuff really aggressive with instrumentation and effects? that's a very oversimplified way of comparing w/ spector of course..

I can totally see what you mean about it being too lush at times. I know nothing about producing music but I guess you could say Phil Spector's sound was very grand? For lack of a better word, though from what i've heard it's great. I don't know whether Kanye west is trying to sound like that but I think it is a tiny bit similar and more contemporary. Mind you i'm sure Phil Spector probably knows a bit more than Kanye does. Maybe they should collaborate. That would be interesting.

give any cat an Akai MPC and a turntable and they can be just like Kanye, Kanye's no genius just a cat to add on what puffy does, instead of slowing down samples like puff kanye speeds them up, with no truncation,

That's why I refeer to his style as chipmunk rock because he speeds things up. So you don't think there's any great technique to that and why do people wet themselves over it?

why? because people who dont know what sampling is all about think its the end all be all, there's no more original creativness in hip hop anymore, the people running the game are cats in business suits, with no "street experience" or no knowledge of hip hop culture. they believe by exploiting the culture and pimping of it, is what makes the money. regardless of knowledge. the Hip hop lifestyle has become nothing less than a Jive ass Minstrel show.
