Why is she a fraud? Because she is a teenage British girl who would only gravitate to the record player as a child when her mom played soul music?

Because, as a teenager, she has been taken under the wing by one of our most revered soul singer songwriters to develope her vocal and songwriting abilities in a genre of music that most American teeenagers WON'T TOUCH to save their lives because it'S more palatable for them to sing pop friendly songs and dance in isolations for music videos?

Whether you realize it or not, attitudes like this are in the same catagory as people who chastized Wyton Marsalis for commercially persuing classical music as a teenager...or even worse, some of those snarky American classical music "purists" who sneer at the fact that revered soul and gospel artists like Aretha Franklin and Shirley Ceasar have spent the last 10+ years studying opera and classical voice in earnest. I've actually sat at a dinner table with assholes in New England who would remark "Shirley Ceasar??? Aretha??? Opera??? Shouldn't they stick to jumping up and down onstage and slapping their thighs a lá Bessie Smith??? Not everyone can be Beverly Sills" ----- confused

no, the difference is that Winton actually had talent. shrug

and so Ms. Wright needed some dough and cashed in her credibility....the details are in folks responce...and most folks aint buying into her..expect for the same teeny boppers that drool over britney and nsynch.

mr.green

That's funny! Who knew that some British kid blew up like all of THAT in the States...I was really under the assumption that she was only popular in Europe, particularly as more vintage-y r&b is held in higher regard here than the britney/nsync stuff we hold so dearly at home...

I also think your perspective on Ms. Wright is interesting as well; in speaking with her, I honestly believed that she was earnestly engaged as a mentor figure to that little girl; absolutely delighted to see that young European kids are still interested in learning and performing soul music with American origins. I personally, never noticed that in South Floridia she was old-skooler who needed dough; her reputation amongst music industry professionals there is pretty solid, and she remains a "financially independent" professional who works very quietly behind the scenes with a myriad of music, film, and television projects while leading a very comfortable life....

I will agree with you 100% on Wynton: I appreciate every thing he has been able to master in both jazz and classical music, although for the latter many "Old World" conductors and opera singers I've told this seem to believe that as a classical player he is a hack at best... and the majority of his classical performances amount to nothing more than musical necrophilia...

What can ya say? Guess we can't please everybody, huh wink
