I agree 100%, she lacks the soul she's imitating.
Hopefully when she grows up a little she will find her own voice because she can sing.

shrug worked for ani defranco. to a lesser extent, it's worked for tori amos.

of course, early in his career prince came across looking pretty bubblegum too...it took a few years for him to be seen as a force to be reckoned with.

i saw her on tour with john legend over the summer. we got there a lil late because we expected her to be first and we only wanted to see john. turns out she headlined the show. it was odd, i didnt think she was that populsr. what really pissed me off tho was that when she sang, i couldnt understand a damn word coming out of her mouth. she sounded like she had marbles in there, she may have just been making sounds...
yea, i know...

Good points. When you start in your teens I think you should be allowed some room to grow into finding yourself as a singer. She's still sooo young to be tackling this kind of music, so I would actually like to see what she can do with her abilities when she's say...23....by that time she will have gone through enough boys, money problems, and false friends to really have something to wail about lol

In a day and age when Ashlee freakin' Simpson can put out a number one album, I just can't get motivated to be annoyed by Joss Stone. Yeah there's always a list of "not as cute and popular, but way more talented", that's the music business.

At this point in her career, she's promising at best. Time will tell if she lives up to that promise.

That's exactly the point I was trying to make, when I mentioned other "artists" like Britney Spears and J-Lo.In this day and age,we should be applauding someone like Joss Stone, who actually has talent. The girl can sing.Put her up on stage in a duet with Jessica Simpson or Ashanti, and she will blow them away.

Everytime I hear her on the radio, (in the brief moments I accidently hear her on the radio that is) I just cringe because she has this voice that is just slightly off-key all the time. She has a powerful voice it seems, but to me it's always a bit off, which really irritates me.

Hmmm, I agree that Joss Stone can indeed sing and has good aspects to her voice - but too think that vomitting through my eyes would be a more pleasant experience than having to listen to her for an extended period - I think she is just a bit too plastic and nauseating to be able to stomach - different styling and a much more simplified approach may help, but in the meantime i'm off to throw up euuurrrrggggghhhhh!

at least someone like Britney never pretended to be anything other than what she really was - lol

nice visual smile Actually Britney could sing when she was a kid. Somehow she grew out of her voice.

I had 2 do a triple-take when I read this cuz I've never heard any1 other than me say this. Her voice on record now is so digitally altered 2 remain cutsey, young and sex-kittenish (which is why she has a near-impossible time re-creating that sound on the few ocassions that she does sing live). Britney's vocal register is actually fairly low, but that don't really sell pop records. Not that she was ever an Earth-shattering vocalist, but what vocal talent she did have was done a horrendous disservice by her handlers.

The amount of attention she gets is baffling to me. I mean, I understand it but I'm just not buying into it. So it's slightly irritating b/c I don't see the mountain of talent that she supposedly has. But whatever, she has yet to release something I like. shrug

So your saying people that have a nice singing voice but don't (in your opinion) sing with emotions have no talent? So how do you judge whether she is singing without emotion or not? Do you know what she sounds like when she is or isn't singing with emotion?

nod

Just look at Janis Joplin. That woman could not sing to save her life, but she poured her heart into every single note, so that made her great.

Again do you know how she expresses emotion? I have always been under the impression that people express emotion differently. Can you honestly say you know how she sings with and without emotion? Just cause your not "moved" does not mean she is not singing with emotion.

do people question wether meryl streep can become a character? a story teller is a story teller....

im not talking about expressing a certain emotion (sadness, happiness)..im talking about conveying the emotion that the lyric requires in order to tell a story..

Her soulful voice does sound a lil forced, but I dont really think she's faking it completely. But Betty Wright approves of her, so I'll roll with it. I like her song "Jet Lag".
