i don't know that there's such a thing as avant garde/experimental hip-hop or rap...you might like princess superstar - she's rap, but she comes from a punk background and her stuff is really campy and very funny.

Not enough!
it's sad because sooo much could be done to hip-hop to enhance it, but whenever someone does it's considered crossover. There are a couple of folks out there experimenting, though it's not experimental enough for me. i think those who decide to stretch out do so lyrically instead of musically. One cat who seems to be headed in the right direction is Mike Ladd he's behind of the scenes of The Infesticons and The Majesticons. Supposedly, these groups are rivals and despise each other. The Infesticons are underground/experimental and lyrically abstract, where as The Majesticons are a more typical rap group glorifying all of the superfical things most top 40 rap acts do. Off the top of my head, i think Dr.Octogon is the most experimental stuff i've heard to date, though this dropped back in '96 so i might change my opinion if i refresh my ears. Too bad Kool Keith and Automator couldn't work things out, i think they had alot of potential to change the game and send it in a new direction. Though, Automator is now one half of Handsome Boy Modeling school and some of their stuff is sonically interesting, but not interesting enough for me to go out and buy it. I also have to give a shout out to Quasimoto and Madvillan, MF Doom and aliases. These cats are the new shit and are pretty hot ATM. i think Quasi is the most experimental out of all of them. i'm sure many folks won't be able to handle them, but if you have ADD, smoke a lot of weed and love hip hop their latest album is a must!
