Question For all you music lovers with big CD collections.....

This is going to sound kind of silly but where do you store your CDs? Do you have them just laying around your room(s) on the floor? In all sorts of desk droors? Maybe on one of those nice CD racks? On a books shelf?

Where where where? biggrin

Just curious and thanks in advance! wildsign

Closet in the media room. Everything's digital now, so they rarely see the light of day.

True that - my iPod = 95% of my music collection
and my PowerBook holds the other 5%

I still have CDs all over my room though.

Crates for my vinyl and 4 huge racks for my cds. Everything is alphabetized and then cross-referenced by release date. I know if someone was through my stuff because they'll put Station to Station in front of Hunky Dory or War right next to Boy.

I've got simple self-built shelves made of horizontal rusty metal plates attached to vertically placed wooden logs painted black. Look like ladders, cheap to make. Very modernist. smile

I keep mine in "CaseLogic" cases so that I can easily transport them anywhere. I love to share my music and entertain others. wink

Storing my CDs has been a big problem over the years. I have shelves just for CDs but I would have to buy a few just to hold what I have and the look would just be overwhelming. I finally started getting rid of what I never listened to, transfering to computer and putting many in a Case Logic binder that holds like 300. I still have plenty stacked on the floor. neutral

Most of mine (probably thousands) are in the Case Logic Books, and then those books are on shelves....

To be honest I don't have that many CDs anymore as I've sold the vast majority of them over the years (so I could get the money for the type of music that I rather listen to these days), but I just wanted to contribute to this thread to give some alternative ideas to IKEA shelves and (gasp!) CD holders.

A large CD shelf, with a few small towers for overflow.

Question: What do all you guys with these Case Logic and other brand Books do with the actual CD cases then?

I throw away about 90% of the jewel cases and save the other 10% for CDs I send out. I keep the booklet behind the disc in the slot. Sometimes it's a tight fit but usually not a problem. I'll also usually include not just the front page insert but I take the jewel case apart to include the back page if I like the art work or it's an artist or CD I really like.

My real challenge was categorizing them. Alphabetical order makes for crazy shuffling and I don't have the time or patience so right now I've only put Dance/Electronica and Mix CDs in there. I wonder how others categorize with Case Logic books.

about 30% of my cd's are on racks.... (I gotta get more)... the rest are in huge impromptu stacks on top of a stand... others have been retired to crates... but they just keep coming and coming... they're taking over my apt....

I knew someone who had one of those CD jukeboxes that hold like 900 CDs or something. He filled the thing up but of course now he can never find any CD without sorting through 899 others. Don't know what happened to the jewel cases.

Another friend had a music room where he trimmed the floor with CDs going all the way around. The instruments were away from the wall so it just went round and round. Don't know what sort of order they were in.

An older friend who's a true audiophile marks each CD with a seal and stores them in some sort of custom made floor to ceiling wall unit. He has high ceilings so you need one of those rolling ladders to reach stuff. At last count a few years ago he had over 5000.

SenseOfDoubt

Just about 250 cds, closed in a desk - they seldom see the light of the day. Plus 2 cd shelves.

All of my discs are digitalized at high quality in ogg vorbis (quality 6.61) in a digital library which reside on an external harddisk. A few Mp3s (from downloading) as well as WMAs and FLACs are thrown in. Generally I have several big directorys (jazz, classic, popular... okay, these suck, but I did not know how to manage best), and subdirectories (e.g. Prince), as well as "Pools" (songs that come from anywhere, without an album). My favourite selections (complete Prince, complete Zappa, complete Bowie... etc), are duplicated on my notebook.

Mine are in Case Logic 'books'. I kept the books in and I threw the jewel cases away. I keep them on the floor next to my computer desk.
