funny I haven't listended to them in years but still consider Different Class to be one of my favourite albums and easily one of the best to emerge from the 90s, This is Hardcore was also a smashing album. I guess everyone has forgotten about them by now since they never produced much and were only really big in Britain. Tis a shame cos Jarvis Cocker was a great frontman. He had a Morrissey swagger about him. I really love the videos made for Common People and Disco 2000 I wish they made more like that. Britpop is probably my favorite memory of the 90s.

Oh, Debra...can you recall....

I have the "Hits" DVD with all their videos on it. Most of them are really awesome visually. My favorites are "The Trees", "Party hard", "Babies", "This is hardcore" and "Help the aged".

I really joined the Pulp party with Different Class (as did most) an old roomie had His N Hers back in the day, so that was actually my first exposure to Pulp. I stuck with them after that. I even enjoyed We Love Life A LOT. It took me longer to get into that CD, but it finally happened. This Is Hardcore is my favorite. I think it's just a masterpiece.


ps, didn't they break-up after the last CD? Or at least announce an indefinate hiatus or sumptin?

Oh Lord don't even get me started on them. And Jarvis for that matter. They have steadily been becoming my 2nd favorite band at the moment after Zeppelin.

Love, love, love them! And Jarvis has the sexiest voice ever.

Anyway, I have to agree with everything Endo says. This Is Hardcore is amazing and We Love Life is just sublime.

I guess Jarvis collaborated on the soundtrack for the latest Harry Potter movie or something. Someone fill me in on the details please, because that's all I know/heard. And he's got a tiny cameo in the movie as well. I didn't see it, but I heard it was only like 2 seconds long.

One of the Radioheads was in the band as well. And yes, you did get to see them for 2 seconds and hear Jarvis singing thru the scene. I believe the band did 2 or 3 songs for the movie...I never checked if they are on the soundtrack though.

Great swansong with fabulous tracks comparable to their earlier best.

Anyone who is a fan should also check out the VERY early stuff where Jarvis is just finding his voice along to a drum machine and synths and sings about things like "dogs are everywhere that I go..." he had some funny songs back then.

The video for "This Is Hardcore" is one of my all-time favorite videos out of any artist. And I love Jarvis in "Babies". And well, all of them I guess. Now I'm watching the video for "Razzmatazz".

Did you know that Pulp have been around since 1978 when Jarvis was 15 and formed the band?

And one more thing: You HAVE to see the video for "Bad Cover Version" if you haven't seen it yet. It's all these celebrity impersonators singing Pulp's song "Bad Cover Version". So it's a bad cover version of "Bad Cover Version" in "We Are the World" style..

Yeah, that part with the showgirls is just breathtaking. My favorite video is "The Trees" though because the dancing scenes somehow remind me of the "Running up that Hill" Video by Kate Bush and because it looks so tasteful and arty. And I just love that song

She comes from Greece with a thirst for knowledge which she satisfies through sculpture studies at St. Martins College. This is where Jarvis Cocker, the singer from Pulp, catches her eye.

She tells him that her father is rich and Jarvis’ snotty reply is: ”In that case I’ll have rum and Coca Cola”. She gladly accepts and half a minute later she lets him in on her secret wish: To try the life of the ”common” people. She even goes as far as to express a wish to sleep with someone common - him for example.
Jarvis is rather shocked by her suggestion and stutters: ”I… I’ll se what I can do…”

”I took her to a supermarket - I don’t know why but I had to start it somewhere. So it started - there.
I said: Pretend you’ve got no money. She just laughed and said: Ha - you’re so funny! I said: Yeah…?

This whisper is surely the single most chilling moment in the history of britpop (not much competition I know, but anyway…) He manages to squeeze in a number of emotions in these three whispered words: They’re flirty - he is attracted to her and the possibility to have sex with this beatutiful lady is still rather tempting.
At the same time the whisper ooze of despise. He is disgusted by her because she thinks that ”poor is cool” and he is even more disgusted by himself for actually playing along with her.
This is is the turning point of the song. Jarvis has made up his mind, there won’t be no more romance.
Gone is the smoothe voice, the drinking and the joking. The remaining four minutes diplays an affected Jarvis, lecturing this poor little rich girl about the real world, a place that she will never be able to experience.
And what a lecture it is:

”Rent a flat above a shop - cut your hair and get a job - smoke some fags and play some pool - pretend you never went to school - but still you’ll never get it right - ’cause when you’re laid in bed at night - watching roaches climb the wall - if you called your dad he could stop it all yeah…”

There is no information available about the greek sculpture student’s reaction to this tsunami of loathing but I guess the only reasonable reply would be something like: ”Yeah, well ok, guess I’ll see you in the cafeteria some time…”
