Too bad Rick James did not play the bass on the track.
Oscar Alston (from the Stone City Band) came up and played the bass line. Rick took the credit. Are you suprised by that? P did it all "the time."

Bass Player magazine profiled all of the r&b/funk bassists from the 60, 70's and 80's. Great issue! Came out October 2005. I was surprised when I read it!

tricky2 is right. A lot of the poppin' and slappin' bass you hear on the Rick James recordings are not him..it's Oscar. Now don't get me wrong, Rick was a good and funky bass player, but Oscar held it down live and in the studio. As far as it goes with Prince, all the diehards know he can funk shit up on bass.
