This song is DEFINATELY one of my all-time top 5 songs by anyone. The lyrics are sublime. They're perfect. I've had the lyrics framed and hanging on my wall for years now. Of course when I was little, I heard the Bros. Johnson's version first. I had their album with it on there. When I turned 12, I got hip to Shuggie and discovered that he was the o.g. He, right away became one of my fave artists. Anyways, in light of Pali's Brothers Johnsons thread, which version do ya'll prefer?

I always like to choose the original but in this case I'll give credit to The Johnsons , cause I did not know the song was a cover until I bought Shuggie's CD reissue .

Although The Brothers Johnson have a better produced version, i'll go with the more understated Shuggie Otis version.

I Love'em both...I guess I'll go with The Brothers Johnson version, because of the arrangement...and I thought it was an interesting idea for Quincy and the Bros.(and Lee) to put the guitar solo in the middle of the song, rather than at the end, like Shuggie's original...On the other hand, I love the airy, dreamlike feel of Shuggie's version, especially at the end...

I'm going with The Bros. J version..Louis' bass is just THUMPIN' all over it. Lee Ritenour does a nice solo on it too. But Shuggie did create it, and his version does have that nice "70's airy-psychedlic soul" feel to it. Both LP's are great.

Shuggie...no contest...the whole carousel vibe at the very beginning of the Bros. Johnson version just irritates me...I think its cause it reminds me of the Tevin Campbell version which makes my ears bleed and my stomach turn...and there is something about the guitar solo in the Bros. J version that just says "STYX" that I dont get from Shuggie (and thats a good thing)...

Brother's Johnson. Never heard Shuggie only Tevin;s and no the ORIGINAL is my pick.

I love Tevin Campbell's version and I have that re-mix CD! I also love M. C. Hammer's version of that song "A Soldier's Letter" on his last CD, like 3 or 4 years ago.

Very worthy of checking that one out.

That's a hard one. I like the production of the Brothers Johnson version-- it's funkier-- but I think Shuggie's best expresses the vibe appropriate for the lyrics. It really depends on my mood.

I go for Bros Johnson version because it was one the first 45's (for old schoolers) that I ever owned. It is one of my favorite songs of all time. Love the production, the solo, LJ's bass and I remember the 45 being strawberry colored. Anyone else remember that?
But on the other hand I like Shuggie's version as well and he wrote it. But if I had to choose I go for Bros Johnson.
