Killer Joe Since I have to do a product demo next week that involves playing along with pre-recorded material, i've been on the hunt for familiar compositions that don't include prominent guitar.
One of the songs I wanted to have in the list was the classic Quincy Jones version of Killer Joe. Trotted down to the local record store (misnomer as they don't sell records) to pick this up only to discover they didn't have Walking in Space (what else is new ). What I did luckily run across was this 2004 release of... ...Terminal 1 by Benny Golson (the composer of the tune). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Benny Golson is a talented composer/arranger whose tenor playing has continued to evolve with time. After attending Howard University (1947-50) he worked in Philadelphia with Bull Moose Jackson's R&B band (1951) at a time when it included one of his writing influences, Tadd Dameron on piano. Golson played with Dameron for a period in 1953 and this was followed by stints with Lionel Hampton (1953-54), Johnny Hodges and Earl Bostic (1954-56). He came to prominence while with Dizzy Gillespie's globetrotting big band (1956-58), as much for his writing as for his tenor playing (the latter was most influenced by Don Byas and Lucky Thompson). Golson wrote such standards as "I Remember Clifford" (for the late Clifford Brown), "Killer Joe," "Stablemates," "Whisper Not," "Along Came Betty" and "Blues March" during 1956-60. His stay with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1958-59) was significant and during 1959-62 he co-led the Jazztet with Art Farmer. From that point on Golson gradually drifted away from jazz and concentrated more on working in the studios and with orchestras including a couple years (1964-66) in Europe. When Benny Golson returned to active playing in 1977, his tone had hardened and sounded much closer to Archie Shepp than to Don Byas. Other than an unfortunate commercial effort for Columbia (1977), Golson has recorded consistently rewarding albums (many for Japanese labels) since that time including a reunion with Art Farmer and Curtis Fuller in a new Jazztet. Through the years he has recorded as a leader for Contemporary, Riverside, United Artists, New Jazz, Argo, Mercury and Dreyfus among others. www.allmusic.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= It includes an intimate small combo arrangement (piano, bass, drums, trumpet & Benny on sax) of Killer Joe that i'm starting to enjoy as much as Quincy's big band version. According to Benny Golson, this CD was inspired by Steven Spielberg asking him to appear in his film The Terminal. The star of the film, Tom Hanks, was desperate to have Golson give him an autograph to complete a promise to his late father. It appears that Tom's father was a great Jazz fan and had acquired the autograph of every musician pictured in the famous Art Kane photo... ...Great Day in Harlem except Benny's. How large is the poster? Suitable for framing? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
