U2's major label debut was 1980 so I doubt they were really on Joy Division's jock.

They were big-time. So were The Cure. So were every band out of the UK at that time. There's a big difference between 1978, 1979 and 1980 as far as post-punk and punk and Joy Division was there before anyone else really. The first 3 U2 albums all sound like more optimistic, upbeat versions of "Unknown Pleasures" to me. And The Cure was chasing Joy Division for their first 5 albums until "Blue Monday" happened and they started chasing New Order instead.

I think U2 acknowledges that Joy Division is an influence on their music. They frequently add 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' into their set lists, and I know that I've read Bono mentioning Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen as key players in the post-punk scene that the first couple U2 albums belonged to.
However, I'd take exception to the idea that the first few U2 discs just straight-up steal from JD. Remember that 'Boy' wasn't the first U2 recording. In 1979, they released the U2 3 EP, which had earlier versions of the songs on 'Boy' amongst other stuff. For 'Boy', they jsut went in the studio with Steve Lillywhite and re-recorded some of the material. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

While Acrobat isn't the best U2 song ever, it is
The lyrics are amazing, and that guitar solo at the end is one of the Edge's best ever. The song also shows how great sequencing can make an excellent song even better. The 'Ultraviolet/Acrobat/Love is Blindness' trilogy is one of the strongest on a U2 record. And I must be an acrobat To talk like this And act like that I'm the first mammal to wear pants.
