"Minneapolis sound"

Who else than Prince do you think of when you hear the expression "Minneapolis sound", and what songs?

For me, it`s Cherrelle and Alexander O`Neal with "Saturday love" dancing jig

Escapade - Janet Jackson

Minneapolis!

There are about a million Jam/Lewis songs from the mid 80s to early 90s that define this sound.

Cherrelle
I Didn't Mean to Turn You On
Everything I Miss at Home
Never Knew Love Like This
(w/Alexander O'Neal)

SOS Band
Just the Way You Like It
Tell Me If You Still Care
Just Be Good to Me
The Finest
Weekend Girl
No One's Gonna Love You

Alexander O'Neal
A Broken Heart Can Mend
Fake
Sunshine
Never Knew Love Like This
The Lovers
Hearsay
All True Man
What Is This Thing Called Love

New Edition
If It Isn't Love
You're Not My Kind of Girl
Can You Stand the Rain

Johnny Gill
Rub You the Right Way
Wrap My Body Tight

Ralph Tresvant
Sensitivity
Do What I Gotta Do
Money Can't Buy You Love

Herb Alpert
Keep Your Eye on Me
Diamonds

Human League
Human

The Time
Jerk Out (I'm only listing this one, because Cee already mentioned The Time, and I'm sticking to Jam/Lewis numbers)

Cheryl Lynn
Encore

Change
Change of Heart
Say You Love Me Again

Then there's all the Janet Jackson stuff that speaks for itself! Special mention to Force MDs' Tender Love - it's a Jam/Lewis number, but I guess it doesn't fit that Minneapolis sound.

I'm too anal edit

Fun song. biggrin Just so there's not confusion - I wasn't leaving out The Time as a whole. Obviously, they're essential to the Minneapolis sound. I was just listing some of my favorite Jam & Lewis songs.

Up until about 1991, I think they were gold. Perfect pop-oriented R&B. After that time, they're hit and miss for me. They started to sound too same-same.
