first off, windows media player is icky and i won't use it unless i'm just forced to (ahem, NPGMC).

that said, can't ya just view your CD ROM drive via "my computer" and copy the music files to your desktop? kind of a primitive way of going about it, but it's something to try...?

No. When I go to my computer all it does is give me the files of the interactive program. The music files do not show up

How do you save CD music files when the CD is interactive??
I have a few CDs that have interactive features. When you put the CD in the CD rom and close it, a pop up comes up where you can visit the artists site, buy merchandise, see lyrics... But this hinders me from being able to copy the CD to my harddrive using Windows Media Player. When I copy CDs without interactive features I just pop in the CD and I get a range of options based on the Windows Media player and there is an option to copy the CD to your harddrive. I have looked and looked but cannot figure out how to copy the CD to my harddrive when the interactive feature is employed.

Can anyone help with this?

Your problem is that the autorun feature on your CDRom is on. In other words, when you put a CD into the CDRom drive on your computer, Windows will look for the autorun.ini file on the CD and automatically start running the CD when it locates it, which is usually instantaneous. By default, Windows has the autorun feature set to run at all times, so you will have to disable it in order to view files on your CD.

The autorun feature has become a problem because the record companies have taken advantage of it to install DRM and malware on people's computers. So in order to make sure that you won't be affected by a malicious CD, you need to disable the autorun feature. This is a little complex and involves changing the registry, so I'm going to give you a link to a good tutorial on this. Go to:

Once you have done this, when you put a CD into your CDRom, Windows will ask you what you want to do with the CD (play, copy, view files, etc.).
