hmm, ok, go on neutral

and i absolutely go nuts for Björk

then music snobs rawk headbang

i know people who would look down their noses at us for liking those artists because they're on major labels. i guess we're not at the tippy top of the music snob food chain. lol

lol

as long as you don't have to sit in a bunker, waiting for 7 months
until the brown paper bag arrives, with the home-made cdr kit from
your favorite indie band, I guess you're nowhere near the top of
the music snob food chain

This thread is trying to determine why Radiohead fans act like snobs.

I don't know a single Beck snob.

Radiohead make thoughtful, well crafted songs that are both meticulous (OK Computer) and spontaneous (Kid A - working with generative sounds/music). Thom Yorke's voice may not be for everyone, but they are definitely a few steps up from writing pointless crap like "It's friday night, the DJs playing my song, I'm ready to party" shit...

I also have alot of respect for them because they avoid the media. I doubt we'll be seeing a Thom Yorke MTV Cribs anytime soon.

Sounds like you got issues with rap or rnb.

Compare De La Soul Is Dead or Illmatic to whats out now, and there's IMO been a pretty sharp decline in Rap over the past decade. Same goes for R&B. I mean, even in the 80's when R&B was getting way commercialized, especially alot of Motown acts, there were at least some decent singles coming out once in a while. Only once in a blue moon anymore do I hear an album that gets me excited about either genre anymore, like Res's How I Do, or DJ Shadow's Endtroducing. The stuff out now just sounds lyrically immature, uninspired, beat driven and gimicky. You can pick up any joe schmoe off the street and make him/her a recording artist by todays standards, christ even Paris Hilton has an album coming out.

Following a recording acts career path from nobody's to stardom nowdays is like watching the GM production line. Everything is predetermined and fabricated.

Back to Radiohead though, The Bends was a really ambitious album for them at that point in their career. I doubt OK Computer would have even been given the green light to be released if there wasn't such a good response to The Bends.

You could also be describing rock by looking at what gets played the most on radio and video channels.

I dont need a primer on rap and rnb. Especially when there is plenty that is still just as fruitful as your examples mentioned if you look for it. Just as there is the same (and crap) in rock music today. Which is what was odd, that we are talking about Radiohead, the spehere of rock music, and you bring up your distaste for rap and rnb. Interesting.

Back to Radiohead though,

Yeah. Like we have been doing.

They were some arbitrary mundane made-up lyrics, I think you're reading way too much into. Likewise, I'm not much of a fan of current rock acts either like My Chemical Romance, Good Charolette, etc... for the same reasons above.

Then why not bring them up instead of going out of your way to talk about another genre altogether? That's interesting to me.

You can play that? Lucky.

On a related notwe since you brought up puiano, does anyone have Chris Oreileys piano versions of Radiohead songs? I love it.

Its not one of those runoffs cookie cutter tributes. This dude is way into them and as a classical composer, decided to do tribute to his favorite rock band.

I wasn't intentionally / conciously trying to target any specific genre when I made that initial post, you interpereted as such. But since R&B & rap were specifically brought up, I talked about them as well on the following post.

Yeah.. I was gifted with an "ear" for piano.. I can just about play anything..

having said that..

I have both of Christopher O'Rileys albums.. beautiful radiohead music on piano.. I will say the second album became very mundane..but beside that, they are beautiful..

got a few on my iPod

Their Com Lag cd has two really good songs, one is an acoustic number and the other one is Thom on piano. I don't know the song titles because the copy I downloaded had them all mislabeled.

They have a funk song called There There that you could play in place of Modernairre in Purple Rain and its funky yo.

They are like prog rock of today. Masters level rock Ive heard them described as. To me they are like the Kate Bush of modern rock and all that entails. Its complicated. Maybe not...they have integrity (yet are pretentuious but they do pretentious so good!). It's complicated. Once you "hear" them, it's awesome! But it has to be the right place, the right time, the right moment.

I've heard that comparison before. It's fitting. smile
