George Benson appreciation thread

I just recently heard a few songs by George Benson, and i`m loving it!
"Never give up on a good thing" and "On Broadway" are amazing.
Any Benson fans here?

I`ve been looking at Benson cds on amazon, and it seems like he`s been busy recording albums...
There`s plenty to choose from, but i didn`t know some of his albums was without vocals hmmm I should check them out, there`s a few 3 for one packages that
looks tempting...

He's been recording as a leader since the mid-'60s.

The New Boss Guitar - New for $8.84
Body Talk - New for $8.22
Bad Benson - New for $7.71

Are all steals.

All I've got is a greatest hits set. It's all fantastic, but I'm bewildered as to where to begin with studio releases.

From there you can go back into more of his instrumental stuff or forward toward his pop/vocal material.

Big fan here! A very, very good guitarist and a good vocalist to boot. i grew up listening to Benson. My mother had ALL of his shit, so that's how I got hip to him. I especially remember digging a cut that I STILL dig to this day: "This Masquerade". As a little kid, I really liked that song. And of course, "Breezin". During this period, Benson was really on fire. One of my all-time fave films, "All That Jazz" of course opens with Benson's redition of "On Broadway".

George rules..Like BG, I grew up hearing him from my mother's record collection. "Gonna Love You More" was one of the 1st tunes I ever heard from him as a kid. I thought he was a R&B singer until I saw him on TV one night jammin' with Carlos Santana. George put all his jazz chops on the shelf and ROCKED! From 76 to 85 he did no wrong in my book. I missed meeting him by 5 minutes at a guitar show in Long Island and I still regret it. George is a master musician and just about anything you get from 1972 thru 1985 is great. Even his stuff from the 1990's and up is great too.

GB is great. Saw him live several times. He tends to do jazz shows and R&B shows, so it's a good idea to find out what kind of show it is before you buy tickets (unless you like both ofcourse).

His album "thats right" (1996) was recorded at Paisley Park. P is thamked in the liner notes. GB also gave P a Gibson guitar.

Breesin' is the quinessential GB album. It's perfect. I think my favorite GB song is Kisses In the Moonlight followed closely by his version of Star of a Story.

Don't know too much material of George Benson but I adore "This Masquerade". Anyone who has been in a relation doomed to fail should be able to relate to these lyrics. Damn, what a beautiful song!

"Are we really happy here
With this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say
Searching but not finding
understanding anywhere
We're lost in a masquerade

Both afraid to say we're just to far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play

Thoughts of leaving disappear
Every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
Why we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade"

Damn, this song can make me cry when I'm in the right mood!
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I worship him. He is a real guitarhero. He has done some made things on the guitar. I like his old jazzwork as well as his late 70's fusion...

I have been hearing his music since I was a child but never paid much attention. Then my uncle took me to this outdoor concert where George Benson was performing back in 2001, I can't even remember the other performers cause Mr. Benson stole the show. All I know is that I MUST see him again live!

I remember reading in Downbeat magazine back in the mid '90s about an occasion where George Benson and Stevie Ray Vaughan played together at some festival. According to the story, SRV had a huge stack of amps and George had a WAY smaller amp setup and blew SRV off the stage.

Also didn't know 'till recently that George Benson didn't read music. This jazz cat that used to frequent the music store in Jersey where I used to work has jammed with George on occasion and relayed that fact to me. Since then, I've seen it mentioned here and there. George is the man - guitar AND vocal chops!
