The one I most recently became aware of is Johnny Winter. Playing and singing skills.

Compare any of these...

...thumbs up!

To this...

...It's quite sad

Eddie is drinking again. HEAVILY apparently. When he wants to, he can be the king of strings again.
I still think Keith is decent. He was NEVER a guitar wizard.
Johnny Winter has had SERIOUS health problems the past couple of years. Hip operations, wrist problems etc.
It is really sad.

I do feel bad watching Jimmy Page trying to play like he used to.
Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

hehehe, you beat me to it. Yeah, he hasn't been playing much at all recently, although he did sound pretty good playing with the Black Crowes a while back. He has a new album coming out though. cool I am very curious.

Naturally. razz

Jimmy Page has always been a very erratic and overrated guitarist.

I know Freddie Hubbard f'd his chops up at some point...

...Not sure if he every completely recovered.

"Young players only get the exposure to the greats like Miles, Trane and Monk through records," he said.

They've had no real experience with the real essence of those guys -- the way they help their instruments, the way they acted, what really caused this music. Most of the cats trying to play hardcore contemporary jazz don't have their own style. Or there are some people like Wynton [Marsalis] who play the horn, but don't play no hip jazz. They're just into playing the instrument good. They're not creating ideas."

I don't think Dylan's lost it, but in concert he doesn't seem to try very hard to sing at all.

Just confirmed from a very reliable source that he never fully recovered.

Nothing new there.

And it depends on what day you go to a Dylan concert. If he's in a good mood, you'll get your money's worth; if he's in a bad mood, you'll have a really shitty experience.

You're right, because I've seen him sing pretty well on the Oscars and Unplugged.

It's interesting, though, because usually older performers get more consistent, if more boring & less spontaneous. I bet Prince's good-to-bad-night range on tour is much less than it used to be.

Eddie Van Halen is still a good guitarist but not great like he used to be.

Jimmy Page has always been sporadic and uneven but he used to do really good cuts in the past every once in a while. He hasn't played like he used too in any of his performance from Live Aid 85 and after though IMO.

Yngwie Malmsteen can still shred like a mad dog but he has lost his feeling somewhere along the line. When he did his first albums as a solo artist it was the most innovative guitar playing in the rock field since Van Halen.

Don't know, but I'm guessing Syd Barratt can't play anymore.

Les Paul said he has bad arthritis and can't play what he used to, but he is 90 or something and still can play pretty well.

I know I'm going to have to hear from the Yngwie Community but I think it’s obvious to say;

He never had feeling to lose in the first place. The guy is great (and currently weighing in somewhere around 400 lbs.) in a technical sense while by playing Paganini riffs but his influence is limited to people who appreciate that type of music. Unfortunately VH hit the popular market and more people tried to play air guitar to eruption solos more than they tried to play "Farewell" because they never heard it.

This isn't a diss because I respect the large one, but the comparison is not realistic.

When i went to see Page/Plant in 1998 i was floored by Jimmys playing and after the show i met some long time fans who had been to various zep shows. They commented that Jimmy was playing his best stuff for 25 years. I don't think he will ever recapture the pre 1975 playing but according to Zepheads his playing was way better than it was in late 1970s. The bootlegs of shows certainly support this. As for Eddie Van Halen, well since Hagar joined in 1985 he's not really showed what he's capable of simply because the material under Hagar was less experimental and more traditional. When Roth was in the band he really let fly. Id love to hear another VH album though i doubt it will ever happen, they dont even have a record deal.

Man, I was gonna say Freddie....A damn shame cuz he was the king. I love miles, but as a raw trumpet player, Freddie was the man. Listen to "Red Clay" and the stuff he did with Herbie Hancock in the 60's!

I know that Dave Mustaine can't play guitar antmore due to some accident or disease on his right hand that left him unable to grasp objects fully. That's why he had to disband Megadeth.
