-Singer R. Kelly pleads not guilty to child porn

CHICAGO (CNN) -- As his client looked on in silence, an attorney for R&B singer R. Kelly entered of plea of not guilty to 21 charges of child pornography.

The judge set a discovery hearing for August 7.

Kelly, who is free on bond, did not talk during the brief hearing. Wearing a blue suit and red tie, he was flanked by a team of three attorneys.

Outside the Cook County Criminal Courthouse, dozens of supporters voiced their support for the singer, proclaiming his innocence with placards and T-shirts. A few supporters got into a shouting match with some critics of the performer.

Kelly, 35, was arrested in Florida earlier this month, after he was indicted by a grand jury in Chicago on 21 counts of child pornography, stemming from a videotape that allegedly shows the star performing sexual acts with a 14-year-old girl.

If convicted, Kelly could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison and fined a maximum of $100,000.

Authorities said an investigation was launched February 1 after the Chicago Sun-Times received an anonymous videotape along with a claim that the man in the video was Kelly. The paper turned the tape over to police, which then had its sex crimes unit investigate.

Investigators interviewed more than 50 witnesses who went before the grand jury and identified the singer as the person in the video, authorities said. The FBI crime lab in Quantico, Virginia, authenticated the tape, they said.

Cook County State Attorney Richard Devine said the grand jury indicted Kelly -- who is best known for his hit "I Believe I Can Fly" -- on seven counts of videotaping the sex acts, seven counts of producing the video, and seven counts of soliciting or enticing the girl into having the acts.

Authorities would not comment on the identity of the girl in the videotape.

I may get flamed for saying this...but, last night, out of curiosity, I downloaded some songs from his forthcoming album Loveland, and you would just have to hear it to believe me; but he is seriously channeling Stevie Wonder on his new album. Just go to a file sharing site and download the song "Some Things Never Change" or the song "All I" and you will swear those were Stevie Wonder songs. Unfortunately, it's actually a talented sicko named R. Kelly.

I heard R. Kelly's pity song "Heaven I Need a Hug." What a whiner. The idiot keeps saying "I'm a young man."

Time for him to wake up and smell the coffee. He's 35 and old enough to know better than to fuck 14 year olds.

No verdict yet, bacause the trial just started. Most trials take about a week to be completed. B/c this is a high profile case, it may take longer, but i'm really not sure how long it will last.

I guess it would depend on what was going on. The age of the girl, Prince's age at the time the tape was made, and what was being shown. If he was shown pissing in the mouth of a child or something like that he'd be just as much of a pervert as R. Kelly.

Prince's way of operating is to meet the girls when they're young, age 15-16, then cultivate them by writing letters and calling them for a year or two. Then once they're of age, he starts fucking them.

I'm too tired to go into it right now, but suffice it to say that I did quite a bit of studying on Child Sexual Abuse while doing my Master's degree and I have a lot to say on the matter. All I'm willing to say about it now is two things: 1. just because something has happened in the past (i.e., arranged marriages between much older men and young women) doesn't mean it was a good thing, and 2. truly "consenting" means feeling equally able to say "no" as well as "yes" to in a given situation. Ok, here's a third thing: the body and minds of girls mature at different rates. She may look like a woman, but not have the reasoning abilities of one nor the emotional intelligence. Damn, ok, here's a 4th thing: he urinated on her and in her mouth, among other things. Do you think most adults, let alone a 14 yr old, would voluntarily be into that? There was obviously a HUGE amount of influence and pressure from many sources in all that happened between them. It boils down to: "who has the power". Obviously, it's the adult, who also happens to be a big celebrity as well!

I read the most interesting thing today. And this ties in sort of to what AnotherLover said (though I didn't read the entire post because I remembered what I read and I had to write it before I forgot...)

Anyhow...It was an article in a magazine, I don't recall which one, but I was reading it at work.

It talked about a judge in CA who ruled against making a woman who had sex with one of her students serve jail time. It went on to talk about another one of those freaks, Mary Kay Letourneau and her jail term. And how obviously sex roles are being played, because it's OKAY for a boy to have sex with an older woman, it's called "experience." The judge in the case I mentioned had said there was nothing wrong with a boy satisfying his sexual needs or an older woman doing it.

But then you get to R. Kelly and his little girl fetish, and it's all bad (not that he's actually going to get in trouble ) ...An older man having sex with a younger girl is AWFUL, whereas for a young boy and an older woman, it's okay..it's just harmless experience.

Anyways, I thought I'd share that. Obviously, the article stated it better If I remember, I'll bring it home tomorrow.

You made a great point with the article you mentioned--still so much gender stereotyping when it comes to sexuality, isn't there? Boys can and do get hurt sexually by older women and other males all of the time, but it's reported less frequently and is incorrectly presented as much less harmful psychologically (if it's a female perpetrator).

Then you get into the fact that without treatment, most boys who've been abused sexually will turn around and perpetrate on someone else and do what was done to him. Scary cycle!!!
