In 1988,I went crazy over their debut album.Songs like "Groove Me","Teddy's Jam","You Can Call Me Crazy","Round and Round (Merry Go Round of Love)","Spend The Night" and "Goodbye Love" were my favorites back then.

I never really got into their second album, though. They attempted a comeback a few years back, but now it looks like Guy is officially dead.Teddy is now trying to re-vive his band Blackstreet.

I absolutely loved "The Future" album - great jams like "Her" & "Wanna Get With U" were slamming. "Guy III" album felt a little past its sell by date.

Who knows whether Guy will make a comeback - if they do, I think they'll aim for 2004 (album track no. 14)

Back in the day though they were the kings of the New Jack Swing but time moves on and musical styles change and evolve.
Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.

The New Jack Swing era was far better than The RN B stuff they try to sell us now I think...

Hell yeah, Guy debut is a classic, my fav joint being "I Like".

I actually liked the third album although it was more contemporary R&B than New Jack.

Teddy's work with Bobby Brown and MJ is superb too, he's a true pioneer.

I think Blackstreet had some amazing single moments although their three albums don't hold together so well overall.

Don't forget he did a remix for Love Sign too, big Prince fan.

They were a tight unit back then at the end of the 80's~ During my Oakland club days I enjoyed dancing 2 Guy's music. Seeing them live in "89" on there first tour in Oak-town was a blast. Being front row, they put on a pretty good Live show....as did Tony Toni Tone. All talented young brothas.(at the time) The crowd was all about seeing Guy & M.C. Hammer. Oaklands own sons Tony Toni Tone, were getting booed by rude peeps who didn't respect the groups talent & hip refreshing sound at the time. When Sheila E came out 2 the song "Baby Doll" the crowd then showed love~ But its funny cause they were the most talented looking back now. I'm sure D'wayne Wiggins & Raphael Saadiq are having the last laugh.
But Guy knew how 2 work the spotlight as well as the woman. Tearing in2 "Teddys Jam" "We Can Spend The Night" "Groove Me" "I Like" Or the slow jams....them cats turned it out! Of all the acts on the bill, they were the best show 2 see. I was indeed gettin my groove on 2 Guys music that night~ Aaron Hall really knows how 2 throw down with his voice & Teddy adding his magic all over the place really gave U the feelin they would B a much bigger force in music in the years 2 come. But oh well...things happen~ But at least 4 that short time Guy was the sheeeit~
Funny I knew Aaron Hall would B a solo artist at some point. But his career didn't jump off as I thought it would. Its strange cause in the way Of R. Kelleys start & success as a R & B singer, I felt if things were done right that could have been Mr. Hall basking in all that fame himself. Halls a much better singer 2 (i think)...Out of the groups Teddy headed up...4 me Guy will always B my favorite~

I gotta say, those guys (no pun intended) had one of THE best live shows I'd ever seen. If Prince is a 10, I'd say Guy was an 8 (only because u can't put anyone too close to Prince's outstanding greatness on the stage wink ) They put on a SHOW. Yeah, sure, Aaron had the usual bump & grind nasty man thang goin', but he didn't let that get in the way of hitting those notes ON key. Crazy Legs was dancin' all over the stage, sexy as he wanted to B, working the ladies with the most beautiful eyes ever given to a man (other than Prince big grin ) Teddy held down the music. Can't remember even ONE glich the whole nite. Had the crowd on their feet the whole nite. I really wish they would have blown up. These R&B cats nowadays don't hold a candle to the fiery energy these guys had shown on stage.
Oh, yeah, and the music. lol The 1st & 2nd albums were CLASSICS. I dare anyone not 2 at least nod to HER and TEDDYS JAM II; and, although fellas were put off by all the groaning, TEASE ME 2NITE gets most ladies I know all warm and tingly inside. mr.green And, let's not forget the re-mixes. Man, I wish they would have put that re-mix of DOG ME OUT on the CD instead of IWGWU (CLUB VERSION). That was screw-up-yo-face, STANK funk-swang.
As far as Aaron not blowin' up ... well, we know who's HONEY-LUVin VIBE stole his shine. evil
PEACE

I loved GUY (even though their last album GUY III was stale, so too was the last Blackstreet album). Teddy Riley is one of the best producers around, I like everything he has done from Bobby Brown, Heavy D & The Boyz, Father MC, Wreck-n-Effect, MJ through to SWV and Redhead Kingpin. What I also like about him is that unlike some producers today his music has never oversaturated the airwaves....u look forward to hearing his new jams. I wonder when he is gonna release his solo album Black Rock? Does anyone know?

Guy was a great R&B group. Teddy Riley introduced New Jack Swing to us in 1988. 1988 saw some good R&B records. Their debut album was awesome. Consistent record. Their follow-up record was every bit as good as their debut. Tease Me, Let's Chill and Teddy's Jam 2 were awesome tracks. Plus "Smile" was off the hook as well. Two great albums in a row by this R*B group. I thought Aaron Hall's solo album was good too. He released it at the wrong time IMO(around the same time R Kelly put out "12 Play"). His slow jam off that album "Let's Make Love" is classic "get undress and let's get busy" music.

Teddys Jam is just the pinnacle of that era--Aaron got down on that vocally and Teddy threw it down musically. Dum dum diddy..and he also tore the shit outta Bobby Browns' Every Little Step remix.

Hello all,

DCM here,

Believe it or not, We helped supply the sound egineering for the first GUY tour in 1988-1989. The live shows were amazing to watch from backstage due to Teddy using equipment that were prototypes before they even hit the stores!

1.He bought the first MPC60's that came into NYC and had them retrofitted with SCSI ports and hd 4 linked together.

2.He used Performer and Vision software first.

3.He used wireless MIDI first as well with his LYNC keyboard controller.

There were so many things that he did that I cant even remember all of it!!

And he was one of the friendliest "Stars" that you would want to meet!

Trivia question for all of you TR fans:

What is Teds nickname?

Don't know his nickname, but I was working with one of the groups under the Gene Griffin/ Guy camp.

The group was called Basic Black, 3 talented duds from Columbus, Ga and one cat from NYC who could seriously blow. The had one hit out "The Girl is Mine". They were in tight with Teddy and the crew. They invited my crew up to NYC to vibe with them.

When we got to their place, they said that Teddy had just left 5 minutes before we got there. (dang!) They also tried to take us to Soundtracks, where Teddy recorded, but they wrapped up for that night. We wrote some simple tracks with them at their crib and they agreed to try to put us down with them.

Meanwhile, they let us hear some up coming joints that Teddy's camp was about to put out. Amazing. Teddy is a true genius.

They told us once about a show where Hammer whent on before Guy and Teddy caught part of Hammer's show. It was slammin'. So Teddy went back to his gear and reprogrammed the whole show! Genius! They told us about Teddy walking around the studio doing Groucho Marx impressions. They told us that he picked up a lot of bass lines from old Italian movies.

I was blessed to be able to see a Guy show in 1988 in Norfolk, Va. Magical night, man. I'm a die-hard fan of Teddy's. He's the forefather of merging Hip-hop and R & B together. Too bad personalities broke the group up.

Favorite Cut: "My Fantasy"

"TR Take it to the bridge! Yup Yup!"

Maannn! They were the jam back in the day! Every cut on the album was hittin'. I was in high school when it came out. I used to make bootleg copies of the tape and sell it for 5 bucks each. I made a lotta loot just off that one tape. Those were the days...smile

All time fave cut: My Fantasy
2nd fave: We Can Spend The Night

Makes me think about the 10" high-top fades, baggy pants, big 1 pound gold hoop earrings, those leather neckaces with the African continent on them(everybody had one), those New Jack dances.....If you didn't look like MC Lyte or Kid n' Play, you were outta style!

Hello out there again

DCM here,

Okay I should have waited before giving the answer, but he got that name from a character off of Sanford and Son!! Anyway, Lil Man ceased to exist after he signed his deal with Virgin Records. And he does have a solo album completed but Virgin hasnt released it. So from what I am hearing, Brandy, Tyrese, and other artists are "borrowing" his solo songs for their albums.

Trivia:

What Teddy Riley song did Michael Jackson "take" from Tyrese for his Invincible CD?

What was Teds first group?

Who was the first act or person that Ted produced first?

Is it true or false - Did Ted produce "It takes Two" By DJ Rob Base and EZ Rock?

What act or group did you least expect Ted to produce?
