and erry now and then I like some mindless rap cuz of the hook.....

mainstream tends to be made up of mostly throwaway rap....unforunate.

The fact that 50 pence has a song called "Window Shopper" says that rap has definitely lost some of its edge. There's no voice of mainstream worth repeating. Its based in materialism. neutral

I like Common and Mos DeF. Now outKast is tight too.

Not a hater. I first got into it because of big daddy kane, public enemy, and epmd. I'm not one to say that nowadays they don't make good (even commercial) rap records anymore. Back then it all just sounded fresh, because it was. Not something I can say about hip hop today. Nowadays everything is just too much about radio and club play for records sales. Not so much about artists-expressing themselves. I dig some of these cats' creativeness with simple minimalistic melodies. But that's just a style I like. Rap is the new pop music, and to me lost all of it's raw edge and originality. Hip hop is here to stay and developed over the years. So did my personal taste, and I can say that it's not my favorite type of music anymore. But hatin hip hop? naaah

No one says shit about EPMD looping Zapp back in the day, but no one here would accept that nowadays.

I don't hated rap, I dislike the rap that is out today.

My favorite years of hip-hop were from 1979-95. I also like some rap songs from 1996-99 but because they started to rap in some of my fav. r&b songs.

Now, today's rap suck and also each song is a rehashed after rehashed... you get my point. biggrin

I am a black woman and I don't hate rap, but yes I dislike current rap. It seems to me that some of the underground rap is better than the mainstream nowadays.

Also some black women arent the only ones who dislike rap now.

Because it's boring and repetitive. Actually, some of it I really liked : De La Soul, PM Dawn, Arrested Development. I thought Public Enemy did some interesting stuff. And there have been some Eminem and some Jay-Z tracks I really liked. But generally it's not my thing ....

As me being multiracial...I have a lot of black friends. I'm a Black Creole/Native American, and lebanese.

I think it's because it makes them look trashy, and most of them aren't.the girls we see on the videos who show their stuff...is jus' to get attention for the money. In my opinion,it's not very cute at all! But hey, that's just me. neutral

We sure keep harping on about models in rap videos, but I'm pretty sure everyone knows it is a fantasy!

Did you say P.M.Dawn? If Prince had been a rapper, he would've been this guy. I listen to some rap. But after awhile it gets monotonous. Generally, its the hook that gets me though...

Because mainstream rap has become the same thing recycled over and over again. The only thing most of them talk about is money, sex, blunts and violence. The videos all look the same too. Half naked women. Platinum teeth, Gold chains, Lots of bling, Throw-back jerseys, Lowriders and Escalades. There doesn't have to be a storyline, Just throw in as much booty, Cars and Bling as you can in a 3 minute space and you got it. I do like Kanye West and Common though.

I don't know how you look. But judging from your description, you're just the type they want for the average rap video too. biggrin

Mainstream rap music = every negative black stereotype + old skool soul sampling.

In the mainstream, It used to be just about fun and equality, Now its about bragging (lying?) about what you got, what cars you got, who you f'ked etc.

Thank God for Common, The Roots etc. truly keeping it real!

Thats why I said mainstream because I fully understand not all rappers are that way. Just the commercial ones. In the words of Prince, "Heavy rotation, never made my world go round. Commercialization of the music -- is what brought it down!" Truth...

Prnce can talk, anyone say "rave....."

Commercialization of rap was bound to happen. Shit, it happened to rock n roll too. I happen to like popular rap from the early 90's. and no denying a song like 50's "p.i.m.p" was good to dance to in clubs.

ImYours

I don't care if this was for the females, I'm gonna answer this: I persoanlly don't like rap, but I do have a real problem with rappers who don't do anything but rhyme about how much they got. It didn't last in the 80s and it won't last much longer today.

And also, why is it that the rap industry is largely based on "The Battle", where rappers basically hurl childhood-like insults at each other? I grew out of this when I was like 13, but I wish I had known it would be this popular. I was good at it, and I coulda been rich by now.

That said, these are the rappers I like: Missy Elliot and Outkast - Busta Rhymes is okay, and gotta give props to Snoop for how much "luhs" the kids. Eminem seems to be hitting his stride and making productive rap with a serious message, so we can forgive the whole gay-bashing lyric period. And I gotta admit, I like a Li'l Jon/Eastside Boys song now and then.
