Is the question just for women? Or can men get in on this too?

I'm a black woman and rap is okay with me its just certain rappers that make it less than what it is...

Very few of the popular rappers on the charts are clever with wordplay and flow, making their rhymes make sense. There's tot much emphasis on the jewelry, flossing thuggish lifestyle. I'm guilty of not buying or seeking out the creative underground groups and rappers who focus more on skill, beats and intelligence. Those are a few of my gripes. Jeux Sans Frontiers

I don't hate all rap, just the misogynistic stuff that brags about big money. That's pretty ugly to me. And I think the videos that that accompany some of these songs are pretty awful too. For example, I absolutely detest videos like "Outta Control" and "window Shopper" from 50 cent. "Outta Control" for the way women are portrayed (there's one girl sitting next to some g-unit man in a short dress with her legs gapped WIIIIIDE open, like she's ready for pap smear or somethin'

Because it often lacks melody, relies far too much on samples and (contemporary rap, at least) usually has nothing to offer in a lyrical sense.

Why I oughta... Hip-hop was great in the early years, before it was bastardized into gangsta rap by corporate interests.

No originality..... The sampling! Can't they come up with their own music? I remember I was listening to The fuckedelics one day, and my 16 yr. old nephew asks me, "When did you start listening to Dr. Dre?" Sadly, these younger people don't even know that most of their rap, (r&b too) comes from 10-20 yr old songs! No creativity.... The endless, aforementioned money, cars, hoes, money, cars, hoe raps! They can't even dress differently... The standard "uniform", oversized sports gear, with alll the bling! Finally, and most important to me, No musicianship..... I can't listen to a form of "music" where I will never hear a John Blackwell drum solo!Stevie Ray Vaughan Guitar? Branford Marsalis Sax? Herbie Hancock Piano? or at least some talented singing? I can't enjoy rap for what it is, as Zelaira mentioned, because it lacks all the things I need to have to enjoy the art form of music

I don't like rap because it's place in music has become too huge and for no reason except for the music industry that wants to keep us in a low state of mind and soul by producing such large quantities of it.. I mean, look what happens when you go to the 50 cent home page: he's waiting for you with a gun and every time you klick on something, he shoots you with it !! Well that's realy nice..
And the music industry keeps modeling young generations with so they can sell them any kind of shit... They are lowering the taste of the general public.. And this is also accopmlished by makin violent and morbid movies,, video games etc... Nile Rogers from "Chic" said that when he made his album, he went to the bosses and they said: "Ok, this is good, but, you have to add a rapper on your record and remove a make the beat sound more like rap".. And Nile comments that it is no longer about music; it+s just about industry..You have that interview on www.chictribute.com.. What I'm saying is : There is no more diversity in music.. You are not allowed to make good music because no one will put your record out..

REPEAT: Eye said: I don't like rap because it's place in music has become too huge and for no reason except for the music industry that wants to keep us in a low state of mind and soul by producing such large quantities of it.
Once again for those who didn't get it the first two times: Eye said: I don't like rap because it's place in music has become too huge and for no reason except for the music industry that wants to keep us in a low state of mind and soul by producing such large quantities of it.

Well, this black woman can do without it.And I'm sure there are plenty of black men, white men,& white women who hate it too. So,what do black women have to do with anything? Eye & sdekm1 pretty much summed up my view. And why are certain people always ready to go off everytime someone has the audacity to say they don't listen to rap,its ok for people to hate jazz, and nobody says anything about that. I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

I can't say I flat out hate rap, but at the same time, I don't support any of those that are representing the genre today. Basically the comments that have already have been expressed, I agree with. It's one thing to like the beat, and in that case I'd rather hear the music and leave out the MC's and crew. When the lyrics are full of cussing, focused on what you have, what you want, who you want, dissing women, what a woman is gonna do for you, groupies, and the like, it just doesn't do anything for me. I'm not saying that every song has to have an important message in order to be legitimate for me. I don't even listen to R&B/hip hop stations anymore, so I've been doing fine without it. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

I don't hate rap. But admittedly I'm not too fond of Tony M. Okay that was a cheap shot. Actually I don't hate rap at all. I just resent rap's monopolizing the music industry. The tyrannical reign of rap is strangling musicianship. S.E.C. anyone? Where are the bands that write music and play instruments? The Cameos, EW&F, Midngiht Star, Bar-Kays, Isleys...etc. I know rap is what people want. But I wish there was more diversity available to the masses. But it's just cheaper to put out a rap album than a traditional one. The reign of rap is the equivalent of outsourcing to third world countries. Okay maybe that's not the best analogy. But you get my point.
And you wonder where Andre Cymone is? He isn't hiding. He's on strike!

Go ahead. I listen to some rap. Of course, I can't really help it. It's everywhere. But I dont' dislike all of it. I like Lil' Jon's stuff primarily for the rythmn..the lyrics leave much to be desired though. So hit me with a list....

I like some rap....Common, Mos Def, Jean Grae, The Roots.....good music to me and erry now and then I like some mindless rap cuz of the hook..... mainstream tends to be made up of mostly throwaway rap....unforunate. The fact that 50 pence has a song called "Window Shopper" says that rap has definitely lost some of its edge. There's no voice of mainstream worth repeating. Its based in materialism.
