I'am swedish and I cant stand Abba. Maybe it's because I heard their songs so many times when I grew up.

I hate em. Theyre just annoying and cheesy! In fact its possible their fans that annoy me more, not in general, but just that certain breed of women who treat their, and many other 70s cheesy pop songs, as their own personal anthems. Im sorry if thats too bold for you, or offensive, Ive just always been a bit too much of a music snob for Abba ....twocents

Right on sis!

I like 'One of Us', and the Erasure cover of 'Take a Chance on Me'. Other than that, not a fan.

I'm not that crazy about Abba. All their songs seem to have the same structure, and the girls harmonise in the same tone in almost everything. Do they ever take solos instead of singing along together like a choir? Do they ever sing in a soft tone instead of yelling it out like a public service announcement? Is there anything that would constitue as something that isn't a perfectly contrived commercial radio hit?

I dunno, I only know the singles, and my brother is obsessed with them. I put up with the same songs blasting through the room every Christmas.

I think Abba fans annoy me just as much as Beatles fans. It's like they can't accept that they're not everyone's cup of tea, and that there's something seriously physically and mentally wromng with you if you don't feel the same way as them. I got into a conversation about them when my bro bought my mum the hits DVD for Christmas and my uncle really couldn't explain why I "should" think they're the best... I just SHOULD eek

If you haven't seen it, get the movie Muriels Wedding which came out in 1995 or so. It uses Abba's music brilliantly. They are a real nostalgic trip for me and their music is a part of my earliest memories. Superficially they are easy to dismiss, but good songs don't last without some kind of substance. They were great songwriters and I love the way they blended their voices. And I said it on a thread only about a week ago but you have to respect them for turning down a billion (yes BILLION) dollars to reform. Clearly they were not in it just for the money, they obviously loved creating memorable songs.

I find it weird that people get nostalgic when they hear ABBA. They sort of transcend nostalgia since their music hasn't been off the radio or TV for the last 30 years. It's just as irritating as Elvis because every single year is some sort of significant anniversary so it's time to wheel out the same group of about 10 similar documentaries to show on different channels within the space of a month disbelief

Unfortunately familiarity can breed contempt with many people - I'm as sick as anyone to hear Dancing Queen belted out at any mixed-age party, but if you delve deeper into their catalogue I think you'd at least have to give them grudging respect. Unless you're into heavy metal. lol

They can sound dated, twee, and very much of their time, but the quality of their melodies and the production values of their later albums can't be denied. There were very few 'filler' tracks.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have all of their albums (mainly down to laziness!), but I've made the effort to hear more than the twenty or so songs that EVERYONE knows and are probably sick of, and in my opinion the respect they have in the pop industry is well deserved.

Set your prejudices aside, listen to 'Voulez Vous' or 'Arrival', and then make up your own mind once and for all.

p.s. Oh, and Agnetha had an awesome bottom.

it should also be noted that Agnehtha and Frida are both vey gifted vocalists, and that Agnetha was extremely hot. Even more beautiful than Stevie Nicks and Debbie Harry, imo. I'd post pics but either I don't know how or my laptop won't allow me.

where i come from it's almost a sin to like abba. although one of my mates recently admitted he no longer only listens to them when he knows there's no one else around. and u don't have to like them, but i don't think anyone can deny they're very talented, much more so than your average pop group.

I only like three ABBA songs. "Take A Chance On Me"(I Like the Barbershop quartet background vocals on that song) "Money Money Money"(Kind of a haunting tune. I like it) and "Knowing Me Knowing You"( I can relate to the lyrics.). I can't stand the way too much overplayed "Dancing Queen". and "Waterloo" SUUUUCKS! I saw their concert film. WEEEEEIIRD!

Thats the case now but they were virtually invisible in the '80s, unlike The Beatles or Elvis. It really wasn't until Bjorn Again and Erasure and then the movies Priscilla and Muriels Wedding that they really came back in the early '90s.
