The Beatles: Rock or Pop?

Ok. I don't have any of their albums, but from the popular songs I know, they seem more like a pop act. I remember singing a lot of their songs in my high school choir. What do you guys think" Pop, Rock, or Pop Rock?

They're a pop band who played some of the best rock & roll ever. "Pop" may be a bad word to some, but in the end it encompasses more than just rock & roll.

The Rolling Stones are a rock band who played some good pop.

A bit of a tangent here, but does anybody remember that show VH1 had several years back called (I think) The List? A small handful of celebs would gather and compile a list of whatever the day's topic was. On one particular episode, the topic was "best rock band," and several people suggested The Beatles. Coolio, expert that he is, would not allow it and insisted that they were strictly a pop band and couldn't get over the fact the people thought they were a rock bad. It seemed almost as if he'd never heard anything beyond I Wanna Hold Your Hand.

I tag them pop/rock because their material includes a strong sense of melody, a staple of good POP music.

With songs like:

Penny Lane
Yesterday
Got to Get You Into My Life
Obladi Oblada
Yellow Submarine
When I'm Sixty Four

and on and on, it's hard to deny they're pop. But

I Am The Walrus
Get Back
Come Together
Happiness is a Warm Gun
I Saw her Standing There
Helter Skelter
Day Tripper

are some of the great Rock & Roll songs.

Granted.

However, every one of those songs has strong melodic content.
Even the background harmonies of Helter Skelter.

They just made some great tunes. Whatever box you want to put them in. wink

That's why I call them a pop band that played rock & roll, among other styles.
