Go Gorillaz...I love that such a weird little album with a song about an exploding mountain called Monkey has done so well!

Indeed. Only seven albums released during this decade have received diamond certification from the RIAA for sales over 10 million. One of those was a greatest hits set and another was a double disc set (5 million units actually sold):

(2000) N Sync - No Strings Attached - 11 million
(2000) The Beatles - 1 - 10 million
(2000) Britney Spears - Oops...I Did It Again - 10 million
(2000) Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory - 10 million
(2002) Norah Jones - Come Away with Me - 10 million
(2002) Shania Twain - Up - 11 million
(2003) Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below - 10 million

Those year end tally's are inaccurate. You can add 480,000 copies minimum onto "MIMI" since that 6.9million figure was reached two weeks ago. Since then she sold 190,000 and 290,000 in the preceeding weeks in the US alone. So the actual year end figure for that album is 500,000 more minimum.

Also, the top album of 2001 would have been Invincible since it sold between 9-11million copies.

(2003) Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below - 10 million

but those sales are for the usa only, the list posted in the first post is worldwide. these albums you posted here sold far more copies worldwide, and many more albums in the 00's have sold over 10 million worldwide. this defiently is a sad sad year for album sales if even worldwide people cant sell 10 million or over. although you can see already that madonnas is gonna sell over 10 million by next year if shes already sold 4 million in the first couple of months.

but these sales are only for how much the album sold in 2005 right? so the albums that were released in 2004 dont get the 2004 years sales counted, dont they?

You are correct. I should have prefaced my post by saying those were USA sales only. My point was that not long ago the list ehuff posted could have been USA sales only, but they're worldwide figures.

Actually, I think Shania's "Up!" is probably considered a double disc (I highly doubt it sold 11 million copies....it just didn't have the popularity of her "Come On Over" and they killed it when they could have kept releasing singles).

It sold a little over 5 million. It got double-disc credit, just like OutKast did.

I've seen a much higher figure attributed to the Beatles 1 album, like double if not triple that.

No, why is MJ's album being discussed as the top album of 2001? It never came up...

US sales only. Diamond is 10 million sold in the US (since every country has different gold/platinum standards).

Exactly. That's why many artists (and their labels) need to lower their expectations. If Madonna can sell around 7 or 8 million copies worldwide (a very likely figure for COADF),then I consider that a success.Anyone expecting her CD to sell like 'True Blue' or 'Like A Virgin' needs a reality check.

I'm thrilled that their album is doing so well. It's one of the best CDs I bought in 2005."Feel Good Inc" and "Dare" are excellent singles.

You said it...I notice I do that with Donna Summer, just kind of name drop, but most of the time it's apporpraite to the topic. That was scary out of place!

Well if everyone would just buy three copies of it like I did (regular CD, the non-stop mix on Itunes and the deluxe edtion), then she we can get it up there (and I'm tempted to buy a forth, or would that be overkill)?

According to an article published in Billboard at the beginning of 2002. MJ's Invincible was the world's #11 best selling album of 2001 selling 5.4 million units. Not bad at all considering the album was only available for two months in 2001.

I think Janet's All For You came in with 5.1 million that year.
