Nellie McKay leaves label, new album on hold indefinitely

Crap! I was all set to buy her new album 'Pretty Little Head' today, but then I read this:

From Billboard.com:
Nellie McKay Splits With Columbia

December 23, 2005, 12:10 PM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Less than two weeks before the planned Jan. 3 release of her sophomore Columbia album, "Pretty Little Head," singer/songwriter Nellie McKay has voluntarily left the label, sources tell Billboard.com. At deadline, the fate of the album is unknown; a spokesperson for the artist had no comment and McKay could not be reached.

The parties apparently reached an impasse over the length of the project. McKay insisted the label release her 23-song, 65-minute version, while Columbia sent out promotional copies of a 16-song, 48-minute album. Reviews of the set, which features guest appearances from Cyndi Lauper and k.d. lang, have already begun appearing in music magazines.

At recent shows, McKay had given out the personal email address of Columbia chairman Will Botwin from the stage, encouraging fans to press for the release of the longer version of the album. Botwin left the company earlier this month.

A concert DVD, "Live at the Independent," was also scheduled to hit stores on Jan. 3 but Billboard.com understands that release is also on hold for the time being.

"Pretty Little Head" is the follow-up to McKay's acclaimed 2004 double-disc debut, "Get Away From Me," which reached No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and has sold more than 104,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The lone upcoming show on McKay's schedule is Jan. 22 at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. From there, she will move on to her Broadway debut as Polly Peachum in a new version of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's "The Threepenny Opera." Previews of the show begin March 24, while the opening is set for April 20. Lauper recently joined the cast of the production, replacing "Sopranos" star Edie Falco.

SonyBMG (Columbia's parent label) is a mess.....not surprised she wanted out.....they're the same company that paid radio to play J-Lo to death and put spyware on a bunch of their recent titles without letting anyone know!

I hope she was able to take her music with her.....

I love her. So much so that I posted this news a few days ago, to a similar flurry of activity.

The shortened version of the album is online already. Jury's still out for me. It's definitely not as good as the debut.

i think she is great.

shame about this...it'll come out eventually though, like fiona's did...hopefully not in as bad shape as fiona's album.

I thought the album was cool. Perhaps that album set the stage for something greater that she's about to do.

I like Nellie too. Just read an article about this whole situation a couple of weeks ago, while the album was still set to be released. I hope this gets resolved.

i thought the rapping she did was horrid. it just didnt flow. and the mid-song direction changes didnt flow like when prince does them. then add the broadway style vocals...it was just a really odd sounding album...to my ears.

but if she tightens things up im sure she could be a popular artist.

That's exactly what I liked about it--that it was so odd sounding and unclassifiable. Her debut was my #1 album of 2004. I really hope she doesn't smooth things over in order to become more popular.

odd and unclassified is good. jarring and noncohesive is not.

lol

Agreed. I think her "oddity" is what attracted me. She's also really humble, and her willingness to be herself at despite a lack of popularity is admirable.

I much prefer Angela McCluskey. Same "melting pot" style minus the jar and non-co.. Ever listen to her?

I've heard the name, but not the music. I'll look for some song samples.

The quote that gets tossed around a lot is "Doris Day meets Eminem". She's definitely neither.

her label through that out there, no? its a huge disservice to say such. i think she is talented but she really needs to leave the rapping to eminem.

and she needs some grit. get out there in the real world. away from broadway and then come back.

she reminded me of a white-wanna be version of neneh cherry. lol

can i once again point out that i think she has talent?

biggrin

Yes, the rapping is not the high point on the CD, but I thought it was funny.

I didn't get reminded of Neneh Cherry at all. I admit I only know Neneh from her singles, but the piano is so dominating on the Nellie CD, that I'd be more apt to label her a zanier Fiona Apple than a wannabe Neneh Cherry.
