SenseOfDoubt

i can't stand...

- The Beatles. Don't ask me why, but I never liked them. I have my favorouties (e.g. Lucy), but I really can not stand Lennon/McCartney/Ringo. Both musically and as persons (or image).
- Rolling Stones (again a few songs I like, but very few).
- Jim Morrison (I like the Doors, but the "mysticism" around him... no.)

I do not like the 60s or early 70s "white" music much. Of course there are (great and fantastic!) exceptions, but generelly I do prefer the ones like Betty Davis, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Miles, Stanley Clarke.... etc.

led zeppelin (there are a handful of their songs i really like, but mainly i just find them boringly skanky)
pink floyd (again, i like some of their music, but i don't smoke enough pot to appreciate them)
anything dave matthews-related, and about 99.9% of "jam band" music
ani difranco (though i'll say she seems like a perfectly delightful person)

eek Zeppelin!? I love Led Zeppelin! I agree with you on Ani!

A list of artists would take much too much space and time, so i'll just list a few genres.

Gangsta/"Ignant" Rap:
Obvious reasons

Whiney Pop/Rock:
Young kids bitching about how their life/parents/school/girlfriend (or lack thereof) is all f'd up.

Death Metal:
Or whatever you call what my daughter listens to where every band's lead singer has to sound like they're Beelzebub. demon

disbelief

Lindsay Lohan/Hilary Duff/Paris Hilton/Britney Spears/Olsen twins/ insert name of overexposed, undertalented bottle blonde here.

Whiney teen rock (especially faux-punk a la Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Linkin Park, etc.) "You don't know what's it like....life sucks in the 'burbs.....mommy took away the keys to my Porsche....wah wah fucking wah."

Most rap. Don't give me the lectures. I know there's good rap out there. GREAT rap, even. But gangsta or otherwise, the majority of what we're exposed to in the mainstream -it's even permeated it's way into insurance commercials and childrens toys -it's pure shit.

Reality TV winners. American Idol. Canadian Idol. R U The Girl? Rockstar INXS. Not to sound like a cranky old fart b/c I'm only 20, but it used to be that performers would ahve to bust their asses for months, even years, to get any level of fame or respect, and now all they have to do is win a cheesy televized karaoke contest? I'm sorry -but I can name several boybands (probably the least respected musical type out there) who've worked a hell of a lot harder to get where they did than that fuck JD Fortune.

And last but not least: Pretentious music snobs. You all probably know one -the type that will only listen to rare releases by obscure bands to appear hip and in-the-know, the type who looks down on any and all mainstream acts regardless of quality, the type who shits all over you for daring to listen to such a "sell out, commercail" artist as say, Beck or Prince. And god forbid you admit to liking pop music around these self-important fuckers. lol

Common misconception. People will grow usually out of plain heavy metal, but they will never usually grow out of Death Metal. Because some of it is actually quite decent music, you'll need to open your ears in order to be able to appreciate it.

Understand that most of my commentary on the subject was humor driven. My daughter is a schooled percussionist.
So I understand that's one of the main attractions for her as some of the things I hear her listening to are quite rhythmically complex. Whether she grows out of that genre or not is totally up to her.

I'm also a musician and my ears have been open to all kinds of music for many years.
Even music that doesn't appeal to me personally.

The part of that music (Death Metal) I don't appreciate, nor do I care to (the technique anyway), are the barked unintelligible (at least to me) lead vocals.

Kate Bush
Paul McCartney
UB40
Bob Marley
Westlife
50 Cent
Justin Timberlake
Usher (post-8701)
The Beatles
Shayne Ward & all those rubbishy BLAND reality show winners
Enrique Iglesias

Fun Lovin Criminals - 2 great albums, they then get fat, turn rubbish and denounce the music they made that was actually good

Beverley Knight - seems to think that just because she has a great voice, she's entitled to success. Word of advice: use that voice by singing some good songs and then I won't change the station when you come on.

Because for me their music is so damn trite, their vocals are incredibly grating and their personalities are detestable.

How anyone can NOT understand why someone can dislike The Beatles (or anyone for that matter) is beyond me. It seems The Beatles have attracted the biggest bullies as fans.

Ha, yeah. My mother being one of them. Silly woman was 13 when they first hit it big so she's the ripe old teenybopper of the 60s age. She won't accept one word said against them, even when I'm literally gagging at the sound of Hey Jude. "They're the best band EVER, bar none. no arguments". Yeah, well the fact that the rest of her CD collection is mainly made up of Ricky Martin, Westlife, Jason Donovan, Michael Bolton and Celine Dion doesn't really reflect well on her opinion.

ups, yep. But I fear that I have been one of those suckers too. Many years ago, I decided to listen to "Jazz only" and contemporary classical music only... hence, I was still young those days. I wanted to become an intellectual beast... And the true reason was again to get some pussy! God, when I think of that... I was truly an idiot, claiming that the only good music was the one without words. The most stupid thing I have ever said.

Today I listen sometimes to "jazz" (whatever that is), but the most satisfying moments I get out of Prince, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, etc... And if "Low", "Trans Europa Express" or "Sign O' The Times" (yes, the album grew rapidly on me, since I once stated I was disappointed!) aren't masterpieces, I don't know what the term "masterpiece" is all about. My music-taste is now pretty conservative, since most of the acts that I listen to had their prime in the later 70s, early 80s.

I dont care for K.C and the sunshine band. 50 cent Im starting to get tired of. I like a few of his songs(not to gangsta ones). Not really into Beyonce and Ashanti.Beyonce had 1 or 2 song i like that was 2 years ago and Ashanti musice after 2002 is just boring.

Yeah, I understand why people like him. I even like some of his songs. It just bothers me to watch him sing. I think "Don't do that!"

Paul Simon, too. Some great songs I like to listen to, but when I see him now, I think "What a weenie!"
