I agree with a lot of what Rick James said. The "bitches, hoes, and nigga" lyrics were used to shock the listener but then it just became tiresome. It's pointless, just like an adolescent who shouts "shit" just to annoy the adults.

Comin' from Rick James that's like watching a lecturer piss on his shoes.
The lyrics to "Super Freak" glorify promiscuity and horny lusty nymphos.
I ain't mad at him, but he's done everything except a call this type of
woman a "ho".

I think the same thing sometimes with Prince andhis newfound respectability..he's had BJB, Irresistable Bitch, etc. Bob George, Hide da Bone and more. But like Prince and anyone else, that was in their youth and people are allowed to change and realize they were wrong about certain things.

Yea but Prince will at least "walk the walk" if his talk is wack. All RJ is doing is self-promotion. I'll dog Prince to no end for his marketing of NPGMC and pimping of his fanbase, but I give him big ups for using the CELEBRATION to highlight lesser know artists like Norah Jones, Bernard Allison and even Maceo. Rick's only in it for himself

Thanks to everyone for replying. I really didn't realize that it went that far back. You learn something new everyday.smile

Even ten years ago it wasn't as noticable as it is to me today. As I said, I don't find anything wrong with it, and think more people should dig a little deeper into other cultures, not only for the history, but for a little more knowledge period. I guess, like I said, when they go all out (think Jenny Jones here with the speech mostly) it's just a little strange when they're clearly working towards something...and that's what makes me curious. It's not the facination with Black music, as it is seeing another trying to hard to be something that they're not.

I don't know. I probably shouldn't have even raised the question. because to me it is a touchy subject to ask of anyone - that, and I don't always relay my thoughts well and sometimes what I'm trying to say is misunderstood. It's just something that I've been a little curious about for the past few years, especially after seeing the change in these two guys in particular. The only answer they have ever given me was that they were meant to be born black. I'm just not understanding - they weren't this way three years ago.

You shouldn't regret bringing it up, it's just a fact of life that it's been happening, like I said, obviously since the early days of rock (obvious because of television), and even prior to that - because although television wasn't there to help document it doesn't mean it wasn't happening. There's nothing wrong with asking an honest question.

True Prince is walking the walk etc...but we dont know if RJ is doing the same thing. It may be true that he has stopped burning women with crack pipes etc. Although it does seem maybe that RJ is a bit bitter.

I guess it's just more noticable to me now, for whatever reason. I wasn't sure if it was because they simply thought they would look much more cool, or if it was because of Eminem and they thought "why not". I guess it seems odd to me, with my two friends that I'm talking about, because you can tell that it isn't them. You can tell that it isn't coming naturally to them. Thanks for responding. smile

It's interesting the way that I answer the question about how this practice of white kids emulating black music goes all the way back to the 1950s, then 10 minutes *later* Supernova came along and says the same thing.

Yet it's Supernova who is thanked for responding while I am ignored. Lovely site, this prince.org...

If Rick was smart he would just chill and be greatful for his legacy of 78-82 output. Of course he does not have a multi- million complex and a solid fanbase still , he can should still be happy for what he did do music-wise, not crack pipe-wise hehe.

"'Super Freak' was a song man. 'Super Freak' was a song about a scenario, a situation. It didn't say b***h and hoe," he explained. "When a person can sing a song about how long his [private part] is and rub a b***h's a**, and go 'Whoop De Whoop' and get a hit record, now that's scary."

RIGHT! Say it loud James! Teach the babies! It is sick how music like that gets out. It's probably because it's allowed to flourish for irresponsible profit hungry record company corparate creeps.

"...he stated even though he said hopes artists would produce more organic music. "I really wish they knew how to play instruments so they can take black music to another level," he continued. "

Or SING. Unlike all hip-hop artists and the actress turned singer, turned fashion designer, turned restaurant owner...or the boy-band, boy-nu-metal/hiphop bands...

James was especially vocal about five time Grammy award winner, Alicia Keyes who he said is "The Gong Show." "I got a 13-year-old girl in Buffalo who will take Alicia Keys, eat her up and spit her out like a suppository," he stated to Daniels."

Bring her on! Alicia has a long way to go. She's humble but the machine running her is greedy and overly ambitious. If she doesn't move away from the Prince/Stevie Wonder reference it could be over. That's my take on her.

I'm actually glad to hear James speak his mind. Not worrying about being politically correct.

"There a some artists that James admitted to enjoying. "There are a couple of people out there. I love Maxwell. I love D'Angelo and what he's trying to do. I wish he would do what [he wants] not what people expect him to do. Maxwell is a great concert. It's so hard because there are not a lot of youngsters out there who are doing real music," he said."

D'Angelo and what he is TRYING to do...be like Prince...which isn't going to happen...ever. Maxwell is a great concert because he's the greatest Prince IMITATOR ever witnessed! He's a total rip off.

BUT it is cool that they are trying, agian, TRYING to be musical...do real music.

"I loved his candor and honesty. Most of the time, these artists and celebrities act mousy and hold back, putting on a facade of something that they are not, or and image they don't believe in," Daniels said."

Jeniffer LOPEZ is a prime example of that. She recently said in an interview that Diddy was a "genius and a real musician" she would love to work with again...something like that. Something insincere...fake. Maybe that's why most people really are getting sick of her. Brittney's like that too. Unreal and insinsere...safe...not offensive or true.

Daniels also said that he has received a large number of emails from readers who agree with James' sentiments about today's popular music. "Although he comes off a tad bit pessimistic, I don't think he was too far off base with his views on today's music scene," Daniels said.

It's hard not to be pessimistic about black music. It's really gotten bad. Since the early 90's it's been downhill. Except for a few exceptions.

As for white rock...if you want to split it up like that...The Strokes and The Hives can save Rock n' Roll. They are pretty original...they speak their minds about the music industry bs. The Hives have said people are starting to see how bad nu-metal hip hop is...plus they have an excitementt to them, The Hives, and The Strokes' lead guitarist doesn't hold his guitar low slung. I haven't seen that in many, many years. The lead singer of The Strokes has an intensity as well that's genuinly great.

Back music doesn't have anything exciting like that anymore. Hopefully the band idea will come back into black kids musical aspirations.

But the PESSIMISM comes from how kids see how EASY it is too be a hip hop / pop star without a love or a passion for music and musicianship.

It's like a bad cycle. Kids "like" that stuff, see how easy it is to us a few samplers, do stupid stuff for the next generation to "like" then it's another generation who doesn't want to create real music.

You like the HIVES that much? Their song's ok, but it reminds me of THE KNACK's "My Sharona". My money for the next big trend is black funk metal. Not so much rap vox on top of loudish guitar mixes, but complete bands that sing in a really soulful manner and play a hardrock style. The top prospect is Jimi Hazel. His style both progressive and agressive.

Most people don't know rick and prince would swap
girls(appolonia and vanity and the girl who helped
rick burn the girl with a crack pipe).so prince
is just as dirty although prince doesn't seem 2 have
a drug problem.rick is just a musician,who whether
u like it or not wrote some kickass songs 4 himself.
the maryjane girls and teena marie(who is heavily underrated).AN BY THE WAY FIX THIS PAGE IT'S A PAIN 2

I have to agree...unfortunately, black music today is very plastic, with some exceptions. I dont like to live in the past, music should be in sync with times, but the producers usually do all the job. They think they can solve all the problems of modernity/music with just a programmed beat, some rapping and a catchy chorus. And it´s not only black music.
Black music has such a force, a power. I would love to see more talents in this area.

I agree with Rick James that both R'n'B and Hip Hop has gotten very stale, but I also think that even though there are artists out there who are different from the pack (Erykah Badu, The Roots, Blackalicous etc)...because they don't fit a particular label/genre etc, they don't get the same exposure that artists like Britney etc get. Also No one is doing anything inovative, its all lip-syncing and loops. IMO the music from 60s to the early 90s was the best, and now its so contrived rubbish. And I'm sick of seeing Ja Rule and J-lo everywhere!

Good point, Funkywonder.

How many times did we see Ja Rule
per4m with other artists on the BET
awards show. He was up there I think
4 different times. They could have
called the show, "Ja Rule & Friends".

That tells me that RADIO is in serious
trouble.
