snowflake

what was the kind of music they played during your typical
night out to your favorite club when you were 16-20?

mine used to be a cool mix of alternative dance and rock
and funk. an average night would be something like this:

Members of Mayday - Sonic Empire
The Prodigy - Their Law
Orbital - The Box
Moloko - Fun For Me
FSOL - We Have Explosive
Fluke - Atom Bomb
Leftfield - Open Up
Chemical Brothers - Leave Home
Eat Static - Implant

plus load of Aphex Twin
Autechre, Senser and
Ozric Tentacles

Smashin Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings
Tricky - Black Steel
Portishead - Mysterons
Mshell Ndegeocello - If that's Your Boyfriend
Arrested Development - Tennessee
Nine Inch Nails - Closer

plus load of Nirvana, Beck,
Underworld and Massive Attack

dancing jig dancing jig dancing jig

I wish we could have just one more night like that!

I didn't go out to clubs when I was 16-20. I didn't hit my club heyday until I was in my mid-twenties. Ward 6 at the Bank in NYC--back then it was all about:

The Sisters Of Mercy
Ministry
New Order
Erasure
Siouxsie And The Banshees
The Cure
The Smiths
Bauhaus
Nine Inch Nails
Depeche Mode
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
Front 242

etc.

Went to my favorite club tonight for the countdown.

It's mostly rap with a dash here and there of 80s alternative.

As a teenager, the typical club played a lot of house music. The last song was always "Always and Forever."

The clubs I went to as a young adult played mostly pop and dance music.

How can you go to clubs when you're age 16 to 20? The legal age is 21.

Anyway, from probably around 12 to 17, I was in the skating rinks and they played disco and after the death of disco they played funk (I only went on "Super Soul Skate Night"). When I was 18 the legal age was still 18 so I went to clubs that played funk. I could only go to clubs that sold beer only because 21 was the legal age to buy liquor. I had more fun in the skating rinks when I was younger though because when I turned 18, Shitney had made her mark and slowed things down a lot.

When I was 19, legal age went up to 21. I went back to the skating rinks then which were playing the little funk that was still left and uptempo rap (this was the late 1980s). I had become disgusted with the state of music by the time I was 20 and didn't go anywhere.

When I was 22 to probably around 25, I went to a club that played house and uptempo Miami bass type rap. Things seemed to be turning around musically. The house music was almost like a reincarnation of the disco era. As house music faded and this club started playing only midtempo rap, I then went to the white club (which I still go to this day every now and then). They play techno. It's boring as hell but at least it's not rap (which I refuse to tolorate and spend one dime of my money to support). I only go out now to get lucky. The days of going out to dance and have fun are gone.

I remember that time fondly. Father Jeff would play multiple tracks by the above artists. A few specific songs that got played heavily during that period were:

Blur - There's No Other Way
Utah Saints - Something Good
Opus III - It's A Fine Day
The Sugarcubes - Hit
Single Gun Theory - From A Million Miles

He also used to play the hell out of The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary" and Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart", but I'd be on the floor each and every time.

I could go on and on.

Well, I had myself a fake ID so I used to get into clubs from the age of 15.

Lucky me! when I started clubbing funk reigned supreme, (I'm telling my age here lol ) but we had Cameo, BarKays, Pfunk, Ohio Players and even Kool and the Gang before they went crossover. It was a great time for music.

Then came disco, which was ok cuz there was lots of good dance songs and I love to dance.

When they started rap I turned to reggae, which I love. With a few exceptions I ain't much of a hip hop person.

I seldom go to clubs now. The vibe is totally different and it seems like every time us "grown folks" find ourselves a nice hideout, the hip hoppers always find us. lol
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

i don't know. perhaps our clubs are different from those in some
other countries.

we do have big disco's where you have to be at least 18 to get in
but most of the clubs in regular towns that play music and sell a
nice variety of alcoholic drinks allow 16 year olds in.

that's not the parents, that's the government smile

The club I go to now lets anyone in, but people who are over 21 get a wristband which allows them to drink.
