A Motown Executive by the name of Kedar Messanburg says he made up the term because R & B is coming back with with plenty of soul for ex. Angie Stone, D'Angelo etc... but I agree with Raphael Saadiq. In the last issue of Billboard where this topic was taking place he said that this neo soul tag he doesn't agree with. In my opinion the newer groups are just going back to that old soul from back in the day & expanding on it, so to me there is no such thing as neo soul (it's a bullshit term) Motown Executives need to call it what it is!!

Neo soul was a term coined by the music media and since I do not know the definition of it I wouldn't know who would be considered neo soul.

d'angelo was the first artist to really have succes with this 'new' or 'neo' soul as it's been called; he started the movement. and man, i love him for that.

I agree with you on Kedar Massenberg. D'Angelo kind of started the use of the old Fender Rhodes sound, which was sort of copied from a combination of Stevie Wonder & Curtis Mayfield and others, but Kedar also had El DeBarge doing this as well (What happened to him?)But what they are doing is NOT new or revolutionary at all. They just combined the old school sounds with samplers and Logic Audio for drum loops! This is my opinion. I still like it and at least people are starting to SING again!!

i believe it's been described as a mixture of the oldschool soul and present state of hiphop. d'angelo was the first to be a big succes, but was immediately followed by lots of other artist awaiting such a break. you can say it's everyhere nowadays. thank god d'angelo is now working in a somewhat different direction by focusing on making more funk-based music.

PPL say this mess was influenced by THE 70's R&B,,HUH??? Call me a bluff but I don't see whats so similar. I mean I have Millie Jackson/Stevie Wonder/Marvin/Crutis/Minnie/Isaac/Bobby/Robrta/Donny and I DON'T SEE ANY THING IN COMMON wit this NEO-SOUL ish, maybe the rhodes/drum programming/synthisizer and all the arrangments but they are not the first to do that. To me the 70's R&B was catchier and more beautiful than this mess.

I see my friends GET HOOKED UP by Erykah/Jill/Roots/Bilal/Musiq/Angelo and the rest and I'm like WTF?? Yes I do enjoy their music but why all the hoopla?? Personaly, I think LAURYN HILL is the best one out there(I don't know is she a neo soul too??) the one who should take the credit 4 her fine work.

As 4 Erykah/Jill/Angelo/Roots/bilal/Musiq I love 'em and I do enjoy their music but they didn't give a BETTER VERSION of the 70's soul/r&b/funk NO SIR.

I dunno but I have a strong dislike for most recent r&b things since Prince's "emancipation".

It's just another marketing term for music that was already there, but is played by a different generation and informed by today's technology. It's soul music by today's generation. The industry likes to keep a movement in a nice, neat, confined, niche to sell it.

I can't tell you who was first, but I do know that Meshell Ndegéocello's debut in 1993 (and still her best album to me, although all of them are good) was the first one that had a big influence on what followed.

Co-sign all that. Omar's contribution to the soul renaissance shouldn't be slept on either though. "There's nothing Like This" dropped 1991...

I think you guys would have to admit that it's not an overstatement to say that Prince had quite a bit of influence on the whole neo-soul movement as well, even though he is not recognized for that. I mean, songs like Dorothy Parker, Forever in my Life, and Adore (all from SOTT alone) were all precursors to the sound of D'angelo, Maxwell, and other neo-soul artists.

Speaking of being slept on, I did sleep on that one and someone told me about it about 6 years ago. I still haven't heard it.

Most definitely he is. And most of the "neo soul" performers always acknowledge Prince's influence. I think Amir Thompson (?uestlove) has even cited Dorothy Parker as where "neo soul" took root.

Yeah like I said above, Supernova and co should check out all five of his albums. D'Angelo, Badu etc all name check him.

As for Raph Saadiq, give it a few more plays as I found it to be a grower... the title "Instant Vintage" is highly ironic.

THANK YOU!

Glad I ain't the only one in this damn room who feels this way. I mean YEAH I LIKE IT but I don't spend my energy on it if you know what I'm saying?? Its mellowed in general and that it the best part. Althought I kindda like Erykah/Jill and I HATE IT when Angelo/Maxwell scream like Prince,,,he gets on my last f-cking nerve when he do that.
