You gotta know what she was capable of.....and then watch the AMA performance of Don't Forget About Us. Mariah used to be able to perform miracles live and seemingly without effort.

I know the 1990 Mariah wouldn't lipsync the final note to "We Belong Together".

You are SO right.

I remember in the earlier years of Mariah's career, I used to sit and watch her dumbfounded because that girl could open her mouth and sing ANYTHING, with so little effort...she truly was a sight and sound to behold so far as pop music was concerned....and that "Vision of Love" performance? Good grief- great timing, fantastic intonation, clear commitiment to EVERY NOTE...it's almost like comparing two different singers. She may have done her big "comeback" and all in 2005, but everything that she's lost in her live abilities as a vocalist gives me not much to jump up and down about. Actually it's kinda sad and MAKES ME FEEL OLD

She probably can't. And the weight gain, unless she exercises vocally on a regular basis, isn't helpful. I know that when I'm going through my piglet phases I can't sing worth a damn. When my tummy muscles are out of shape, I can't BREATHE, can't hold a note...just basically a disaster! I love Scariah, but for the sake of her instrument, somebody needs make that child pull out an AB ROLLER, or make her do the Old Skool "ABS OF STEEL" tv workout 2 weeks prior to her live performances. I'm telling you, a taught abdomen works wonders for your vocal abilities, even if you slack off on consistent vocal exercises nod

(and I know my suggestion is the cheater's way of getting through a gig, but hey lol )...

People tend to forget that singing actually damages your voice, every time you sing a note damage occurs. A fifteen year career of astounding vocals is enough for me and to be honest although not all her recent performances have been up to standard some of them are actually just as good as those ten years ago.

If you compare "make it happen" live 8, to "make it happen" mtv unplugged, there is very little difference in the power of her voice.

If u compare the above "vision of love" performance with "vision of love" on BET BLUEPRINT this year, the latter is actually a far better performance, her vocals were spot on.

I've been trying to tell people that her vocal difficulties aren't really from her vocal chords; they're from her diaphragm and her lungs. In other words, she is having issues with breathing when she sings. While the weight gain probably has something to do with this, it wouldn't matter so much if she did any cardio exercise on a regular basis. However, she loves to eat well and drink lots of Cristal, and she hates to exercise. But this lack of exercise is hurting her vocal ability, as she has to strain to hit most of her notes, and on top of that, singing her lower notes in a whisper tone puts more strain on her vocal chords than just singing normally.

I know she's very conscientious about her mouth and throat, but she needs to get a personal trainer to get her on a cardio workout program as well so she will have more lung power. She also needs to stay away from smoky areas visited by her hip hop friends so the fumes don't damage her vocal chords.

EXACTLY!!! That's what I keep telling people, she's not breathing properly. I don't know if she's not going to a vocal coach or not exercising, but that's what I think it is too.

I loved that performance. Sometimes over the years, your voice may get deeper.

Look at Stevie Nicks. I love her to death, but compare her voice on "Rhiannon" to her voice on the live 1997 version of "Landslide".

Still strong, but less vocal range.

The SNL & MSG performances posted, that's the Mariah Carey I remember.
(Especially watching Randy "Dawg" Jackson on bass)

Her current physical issues aside, she also used to sing great songs.
This hippity-hop fascination is baffling to me.

the hip hop fascination has been, ultimately, her downfall. she seems to have reigned it in a bit, and sort of moved back toward the middle of her repertoire, fairly straight-forward r&b songs. (i say the middle of it, because she's been at the extremes of light adult contemporary and crass commercial hip-hop).

she's returned to the top by having songs that she actually sings straight through, rather than cooing over a sample from the 80's while waiting for the rapper to show up and give her a break during the bridge. that sold her a damn lot of singles and albums, but that kind of success is fleeting and it also is the reason she lost sight of what she excels (excelled) at, which was great singing of songs you could connect to on an emotional level. she seems to have gotten that back to a large degree, although there is a little too much of the other in the mix, and you notice the minute she reeled back that skankiness and had a huge hit, she was back to the same old gutter-ho image for her next video (Shake It Off).

it's too bad her voice atrophied in all those years she was sitting on rappers' laps, otherwise this comeback would be complete.

I hate Mariah Carey, but be real about that AMA performance. She pulled out her ear monitor onstage. I don't know why she did it. But, you can't hear yourself w/out those things. All you'll hear is a 2 second delayed echo of yourself. That probably wouldn't have happened if she would've bothered showing up for rehearsals.
