something else I noticed about Up... is the fact.. (with me) that this album requires cd quality.. an mp3 would rape the essance of the delicate sounds.

It upsets me UP is not on DVDA 5.1 It needs to be. I know it's on SACD but I don't have a SACD player. I do have "Play:the Videos" on DVD and it's incredible. It shows what 5.1 can achieve. If you like PG and have a 5.1 system, get this, you wont' be sorry. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Peter G is my boy...definitely one of my favorite modern day artists still creating great music (Meshell Ndegeocello being my #1 current music maker)...very nice to see a thread about him...
Like Meshell, Peter always delivers...consistently... his stuff ALAYS sounds fresh... and STAYS fresh sounding even as time passes... for me, whenever I am in one of those state of minds where i'm not really sure what 'music mood' i'm in...you know 'hmmm, what do i really feel like listening to right now?? I dont know....' ...whenever i'm in that mode Gabriel is one of the few artists whos records regularly get picked as the ones to take care of quenching that weird 'unsure of what music mood i'm in' state...you can throw on one of his albums on and it will undoubtably satisfy... I've got three of his DVDs as well and they kick ass...especially the two live DVDs that i have...(Secret World Live & Growing Up)...when the family is gone i put those bad boys in the dvd player, turn up the surround sound and blow the windows outta this place... great great stuff... like Meshell, (i know i keep comparing the two, but they are my favorites for a reason) Peter has the ability to create music that suprizes and takes enexpected saisfying twists and turns, yet at the SAME time is able to maintain a signature & undeniable 'vibe' all their own that you reconnect with everytime...farmiliar & new all at once... another similarity i think that Peter & Meshell have is that they both relatively quietly continue making their significant, creative, unique, open & honest, cutting edge & ultimately classic music – while the average listener, corporate radio and the mass media virtualy ignore them. I know they both have groups of devoted fans (including myself) who appreciate and look forward to every new release, and i know that within their peer groups - fellow musicians - they are BOTH HIGHLY regarded & respected for their skills...but on a larger 'general mass' scale they've been ignored for the most part really don't you think? Sure Peter got 'mass'popular in the 80's that lasted for a minute...and Meshell got some small level 'mass' recognition in the early 90s...but the catalogue of work they've both created over the years deserved FAR more 'props' than the industry, & media has given them in my opinion...these are two TRUE artists who are obviously driven by & devoted to their craft in the fullest sense and their works reflect that level of devotion and is far richer & stands miles above most of the other stuff out there...but thats just my opinion... unfortunately 'the masses' pay more attention to the 'flash in the pan' types, or the 'poser' artists who aren't 'really'... but hey, i'm not bitter i guess as long as these two are able to continue to provide me with the musical satisfaction then i'm happy, regardless of what everyone else is listening to... Peter is still kicking serious ass his way...i say more power to him. how old is he now anyway? . [Edited 12/30/05 7:24am]

Justhemusic...
Agreed. Very cool and heartfelt post. Love Me'shell as well. I wish Me'shell had some kind of DVD available. As far as PG goes does anyone, who loves PG, have "Still Growing Up" on DVD? Wondering how it is. Got his other 3 DVDs and love all of them. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Wondering how it is. Got his other 3 DVDs and love all of them. thanks Bfunkthe1, and i was wondering too about that "Still Growing UP" DVD as well...i saw it the other day and almost bought it, but since i already had the "Growing Up" DVD (and since i i'm about broke from all the Christmas gifts for the kids) i held off on buying it this time...still curious about it though and wondering how different it is than the one i already have... Yeah, Meshell on DVD would be great wouldn't it? Her live shows are legendary musical journeys imo. I've been lucky enough to experience her live gigs several times over the years maybe almost dozen times...and she brings it like nobody's business. (In fact it was seeing one of her live gigs back at the start of her career that sealed the deal for me and made me a lifelong fan. I know that the folks at the Montreux Jazz Festival are sitting on the footage they have of her shows she's done there over the years...(she's played there a handfull of times...back in 1994, 1997, 2000, then in 2004) I've seen clips broadcast of the 1994 Montreux gig (which also featured Wah Wah Watson on guitar) and they were cookin'... a while back I emailed the folks at Montreux Jazz Fest... http://www.montreuxjazz.c...06_en.aspx info@montreuxjazz.com and asked them if there was ANY chance in the world of them putting out the Meshell footage for sale...(the show i asked them to put out was the 2000 gig which was BURNING UP man, i tell ya...i have an audience recording and even though its muffled it's still one of my favorites...)... anyway the folks at Montreux didn't say 'no' but they definitely had no immediate plans on the table at the time to try release any Meshell stuff they had...I guess until there is a big enough market it wouldn't make sense for them...plus with her switching record labels recently its hard to say whats gonna happen as far as legal release rights to her old stuff or vaulted stuff...but it wold be great wouldn't it? nice avatar by the way... you seen this yet...? http://www.amazon.com/gp/...ance&n=130 i was wondering a bout it too... thanks about the avi and and I have that DVD you asked about. Quality stuff. Any Me'shell DVD will be apreciated but as you said since switched record labels (thanks Maverick) who knows what will happen. Her latest CD, Dance of the Infidel, is nominated for a grammy so there's hope for us fans.
Back to PG, Still Growing UP is suppose to be him in more intimate settings with some older songs thrown in compared to Growing Up live so it should be good. It's on my list but I, like many, am broke from x-mas. Go to Amazon.com and read some reviews, you'll get an idea of what it's about. Fantasy is reality in the world today. As I mentioned earlier if you have a 5.1 sound system, I recommend Play: The Videos, it has all PG's videos and it's remixed and remastered and it sounds incredible. One of the best sounding 5.1 DVDs I own. And I own quite a few. It will make you delve into all his music, which aint a bad thing. Live DVDs are great as well. I/O...anybody's guess when they will come out although I read recently where PG said he wanted to put it out late in 2006. We shall see. Check his website for updates. Found this...
"The August edition of Mojo magazine features Peter in a regular 'In The Studio' article and lists the song titles 'Wild', 'Silver Screen', 'Curtains' and 'Amazing'. It states that Peter has "absolutely no idea" when the album will be finished - "I went to the painter Howard Hodgkin's studio once and he showed me some things he'd started 20 years ago. I thought, Ah, I'm not the only one. Apart from new stuff, I have this chart of about a hundred ideas, which I'll revisit and sometimes you'll find gravity has started to pull on them. Curtains was actually the B-side of a single called Big Time. Through my website I asked people to vote for the songs they most wanted us to play on the tour and it came near the top. Probably one obsessive with nothing better to do, but I decided to rework it, so thanks to whoever it was." "I do like carefully chiselled stuff. I still aspire to the way Brian Wilson works. I love to get out the magnifying glass and craft a song." "

The Nov. 17 issue of Rolling Stone has a little blurb indicating (guessing?) that I/O will come out in early 2007. It also claims PG's got 150 tracks in the works for it! Good heavens, is that new stuff above and beyone the 100+ he sifted through when putting together Up? Or is it all those songs, plus maybe more new ones (plus Curtains!)??? BTW, I have the enhanced CD version of Up but I've never gotten anything to work when I put it in my PC. What am I missing? "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. I bet the man can create some out of this world soundscapes... The best your gonna get is to collect soundtrack stuff and remixes. BTW, since this thread, I've been revisting older PG, right now it's Peter Gabriel 3 or the melting face CD. My favorite of the first 4. Think Bowie Scary monsters, Dark Genesis, and suff that musically sounded like Primus, two decands before Primus. Without the goofiness. Fantasy is reality in the world today. I've always been curious about and attracted to Peter Gabriel from his more well-known songs, but never explored him deeper. It sounds like my cup of tea. You're actually getting me all excited about this! Thanks for the inspiration.

Pulled it out and listened to it the other day; "I Grieve" is one of the best things he's ever done, but I still think that Up isn't a patch on III, Security, So, or Us.
III and Security are so creepy and dark, Us is so comforting and serene. Up just seems jumbled and unfocused. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

This just inspired me to put on "So". I always forget how much I absolutely love this album until it's playing. "Red Rain" is one of my favorite opening tracks ever, "Don't Give Up" is just gorgeous and gives me chills everytime I hear it. Ditto "In Your Eyes". It might be the greatest love song of the '80s. "Mercy Street" is really creepy, etheral and perfect. "Big Time" is just an uptempo jam and I can finally listen to "Sledgehammer" again.
If it wasn't almost 3:30 in the morning, I'd probably play "Us" next. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.
