Was thinking about buying Jamie Liddel's album - Magical. If anyone has heard it what do you think?

I can't recommend Jamie Liddel's album highly enough. You'll love the Prince influenced cut "When I Come Back Around" in particular!

Yeah, very good to great. Sounds a bit like Jamirotcrotchkwai in places though.

Don't listen to the Jamiroquai comparison as it doesn't do Jamie Lidell as an artist justice. I'd seriously recommend getting 'Multiply' as a starting block to his music as it highlights his strengths. This is in the sense that he's got an eye for a groove and a sweet, soulful voice that would just make you melt. Think Otis Redding, Prince and Curtis Mayfield.

I by chance discovered Jamie Lidell when I managed to squeeze into a hot and sweaty packed hall at the Sonar Festival in 2003. What interested me was his ability to build up a song by cutting up beats and beat boxing over the top whilst keeping the groove funky and melodic. A particular highlight was his performance of Prince's 'Forever In My Life' which began with Jamie beatboxing and creating a hip hop beat, recording it and then singing over the top of it. Everyone came out of there thinking it was one of the best thing they'd ever seen and I'd agree with them. When the change came round to see him a second time round in Sheffield recently this year I was there and he was every bit as stunning.

What seperates Jamie Lidell out apart from faux funk wannabees such as Jay Kay etc is his eagerness to experiment with his music. This goes back to my point of him creating melodies out of nowhere. He's the bastard love child of say Prince and Aphex Twin if you will. This is highlighted by his 'Muddling Gear' album which is a challening listen and his work with Christian Vogel as part of the group Super_Collider. Some of you might have heard 'Darn Cold Way of Loving' from their 'Head On' album. If you love 'Multiply', 'Head On' might well worth be purchasing. However, it is quite challenging on a first listen.

Going back to his live show, this is where Jamie really comes into his element. He's a real showman who knows how to whip up the crowd. 'When I Come Back Around' and 'A Little Bit More' are pretty indicative of what happens at his live shows. Seriously, you must do everything you can to see this guy live.

I Love him, just love him!

Here's a great little clip of Jamie in action at the Roya Festival Hall in London, 2004. You need I-Tunes to play.

For soooo many months people have been trying to convince others of buying the Lidell album on forums. You might have convinced me on this thread.
I remember people were talkin about him on Warp Records back sometime ago.
