I have a friend who was at at a party w/ halle and was in the bathroom w/ halle while she was poopin' and she said there wasn't a trace of the stench of feces that is typically human

For a person who seems to be 'so full of it', but not smell like it, seems like a joke to me.

I can see Angela Bassetts point in all this. While Halle Berry is an outstanding actress, her role in Monsters Ball was not an oscar award performance. She has done better numerous times. After watching that movie, and Swordfish...it becomes transparent that she's being rewarded for stripping, not acting. She was good, but the only part that stood out was the very graphic sex scene.
While I'm glad that finally an black actress won an oscar, I wish she didn't have to result to soft porn to do so.

I feel somewhat the same about Denzels oscar. In all the excellent work he's done, portraying an intelligent, articulate, hard-working, upstanding, loyal, patriotic black man, he got little critical acclaim. As soon as he plays a role that depicts what America really thinks of Black men, he wins an Oscar.

Its a shame that this is what is required for actors & actresses of color have to do to get recognized for their outstanding abilities. I don't blame Angela one bit for speaking out on this.

Oh I soo disagree with what your saying here...Its sad that actors cant just *act*..these two people should be celebrated for having the chance to diversify their roles..if you look at the types of roles that actually *win* oscars you will see that the bad seedy conflicted character's tend to win more then the campy, comedic, or subtle performances...its HOLLYWOOD afterall...

Denzel played a role that Al Pacino, Gene Hackman or Robert DeNiro would have won an award for..That character *wasnt* a stereotype of black men..And Halle's least moving part of her performance was the sex scenes...Actors, (the ones who understand the difficulty of pulling of difficult roles) have gone on and on and on about how difficuly a part both Denzel and Halle's roles were...Think about how little dialog is in Monster's Ball...Billy Bob and Halle had to carry that movie with their facial expressions...thats difficult for an actor..And thats why *she* won the Award..It was a showy, flashy and emotional role..The kind HOLLYWOOD loves...Robert Duvall went on and on about how difficult Denzel's performance was in Training Day..and Mr. Duvall even commented that Denzel was soo good in the film it scared him..This is freakin ROBERT DUVALL saying this...

yet, we black people are gonna whine and crap on and on about how us black people gotta play respectable roles and how we are selling out in order to get recognition...GIVE ME A BREAK...

Celebrate the fact that we have two bankable stars like Halle Berry and Denzel Washington who can make the choice to do diverse roles..Just like Glenn Gloss and Robin Williams can... Nobody seemed to scream when these two actors played physco killers...White people didnt scream..

Acknolwedge the fact that the future is here when it comes to diversity within african american films..Celebrate it..Dont knock it...

damn, let me get off my soapbox now...lol.. wink

On the contrary...I feel Denzel's work has won him critical acclaim several times over prior 2 "Training Day".

From "Glory", "Philadelphia", "X", and "The Pelican Brief", "Devil In A Blue Dress" 2 "Mo' Better Blues" and his most recent, "John Q." he remains one of the few respected black actors who can "open" a film 2 the tune of several million dollars, and b paid big $$$ in the process. I think bcuz people have seen him in so many different roles that the "bad cop" role in "Training Day" is what made them raise their eyebrows. He can do it all, and he's proven that time and again.

How many goody-two-shoe roles must he play anyway?

As 4 Halle, how can u not call her role in "Monster's Ball" acting when she truly displayed many emotions beyond what I've ever seen from her. The sex scene was so minimal (time wise) that it's a shame that this is what most people r referring 2 on this thread. When her son died, and she was in the hospital screaming!!!...oh my God! I truly felt 4 her character.

Don't b so hard on someone just bcuz the role's she chooses is film doesn't reflect ur own tastes. It's her life, let her live it.

(rolleyes edits)

Brother, obviously youre misreading my post. I think Halle and Denzel are two incredible actors, who have consistenly churned out outstanding work after outstanding work. In no way do I feel they have "sold-out". My beef is not with them, but a hollywood community which overlooks the outstanding work they do in positive roles, and rewards black actors for playing negative roles.

Halle's performance in Monsters Ball, IMO, was good, but nowhere near great. She was far more convincing in Losing Isiah, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, Bulworth and even in another negative role she played in Jungle Fever. She couldn't even maintain the southern accent he character was supposed to have. I had trouble feeling her pain, while Billy Bob's guilt oozed from the screen. Thats what carried the movie. Its highlight was the sex scene the middle-age fatcats in hollywood were lusting for since she's hit the map. They even marketed the movie around the sex-scene. IMO, she's far too talented an actress to have to have sex on screen for acclaim.

As far as Denzels role, I can't say whether its an oscar calibur performance...I never saw the movie. My observation is based upon the fact that this was his first "bad-bad-guy" role and all of a sudden, he gets an Oscar. As June7 said, he done so much outstanding work, in many very challenging roles in which he was a "good-guy". Why award him now, when he switches to a bad guy? Was this performance so much more outstanding than his roles in Glory, A Soldiers Story, Cry Freedom, Philadelphia, The Hurricane and too many more to name? I doubt it...but knowing Denzel, I wouldn't be surprised if it were great...he just doesn't do bad work.

I just think its more than irony that these two won the Oscar for these roles. Hollywood, the music biz, & the media are more than willing to cast is in negative lights and show us acceptance and acclaim when we embrace negative images and behaviors. If we as black people don't stand up against the constant negative portrayals of our people, who will do it for us? Obviously not you.

Give YOU a break? No, my brother, give ME a break! Brothers like you who accept this crap are the reason the problem will continue. Have some respect for yourself and your people and maybe we can get the world to do the same...ohkay?

But...he did win 4 "Glory", best supporting actor! He was nominated 4 "Hurricane" as best actor...and lost out 2 tom Hanks (I think) 4 "Forrest Gump". He continues 2 do remarkable work...and he himself said he loved playing a "bad-guy". It supposedly was a welcome break 4 him.

AB ain't bitter toward Halle. If anything, she's bitter b/c she KNOWS she's done work good enough to earn an Oscar by now, yet it hasn't come her way. People just love to see a catfight, that's all. There's no fight here...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

wow...did you completly ignore my statement pertaining to how Hollywood tends to honor these *dark* showy performances far more then the more subtle work...this has been a major complaint of *all* within the acting field..not just black people...all agree that great comedy is harder than acting, yet...the darker roles when awards...

it seems to me like your just picking a fight cause *we black people are always wronged*...look at the previous ethnic Oscar winners...Lou Gossett, positive role...Whoopie, positive role...Cuba Gooding, positive role...Sidney Poiter, positive role...and the first win ever? For Gone W/ The Wind...Haddy McDowell, a bit stereotypical but for its time, a strong-willed person...

to keep pounding this whole race deal it not healthy at all...expecially when there are *serious* race issues to face...or more important, the lack of motivation to progress ecomonically within the african american community...

...I have plenty of respect for myself...please dont assume that I dont...mmm-kay? thats a rude way to engage people in conversation...disagree with me all you want...but to say I lack respect gives you zero credibility...
