Wigged Out
Mean sister: I don't know why Erykah Badu receives all the positive publicity from the Dallas Observer ("Waiting for Erykah," by Robert Wilonsky, March 24). Perhaps you missed the show at the Forest Theatre when Ms. Badu and her sister, Nayrok, sang anti-war songs, calling out President Bush directly in their lyrics. Nayrok opened the show, lasting way too long, and was booed off the stage by the predominantly black crowd. Her '80s metal rock is amateurish and completely clashes with Badu's alleged theme of peace, love and enlightenment. Badu finally took the stage and preached for at least 10 minutes in between one of her songs, rambling and riding her weed high. A black woman in the audience, near the front of the stage, shouted: "Get on with the music!" And Badu immediately lashed back: "If you don't like it, sister, you can get the fuck on!!"

Somewhere in her anti-war rant, she actually said, "Fuck war! Fuck Bush!" and at the end of the crescendo: "Fuck white people! Lock the doors. We're going to have a revolution!" Wow. As one of the minorities there, I looked at my two other Caucasian friends, slunk against the wall, eyed the nearest exit and prepared for a lynching. The audience started filing out down the aisles while she tried to resurrect the positive energy of her set, but I'd guess that about 25 percent of the audience left the theater.

Anyway, do some more follow-ups to this story if you don't believe it. Badu is not all about the love. She's a panther in disguise. Check under her fake 'fro wig.

Erykah has been indirectly saying "fuck white people" since day one. American society has become a bunch of overly sensitive, whiny bitches. The smallest thing sets people off into a frenzy these days. Before some of you "of the fuck you persuasion" have the audacity to use the word "racist", understand that EVERY BLACK PERSON IN AMERICA FEELS LIKE SAYING THAT AT SOME POINT. Even that "black friend" that you think "oh no, not her/him" YES, them, too. Don't even bother asking. They won't share that with you if you're not a person of color. America has countless exampes of the CONSISTANT wronging of people of color and guess what? WE DON'T LIKE IT. Sometimes we don't like you all, either. Does it mean we want to kill all white people? No. We don't. Sometimes we just get pissed just like when y'all see 50 Cent on t.v. Sometimes you "hate n*gg**s". (Bad example - we hate his ass, too) Was Erykah blaming all white people? No. Of course not. People refuse to read between the lines these days. Everything needs to be spelled out and layed out with every little if and or but highlighted. If you can't think individually enough to get it, you never will. We have come to a point in society that people seem to be so STUPID that they need everything spelled out to them or clarified. Political correctness is rampantly overrated these days. Erykah was probably trying to make a point to put a little fear into those who think that we are unaware or incapable of rising up. Erykah is and always was PRO BLACK. GO back and actually READ the lyrics to "On and On". Pro black does not mean "hate white". I don't believe for one minute that she does. She's a sista in the struggle trying to express herself. Its not always hold hands and sing kum-by-ya with her. Anyone who doesn't know that by now is either fooling themselves or simply doesn't know her music.

on the one hand i agree with you. but how does saying "fuck white people" when HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS and if not MILLIONS of white people have bought your albums, attended your shows, voted to give you Grammys, requested your songs on radio, and basically been part of the audience that keeps your career going for almost a DECADE say 'thanks' to ANY of your supporters?

i for one am white and totally understand reverse racism and black power. at the same time i am totally crused if this is true as the person i look up to most in modern society (well...almost) and who's music has changed my life and view of the world could be...almost as bad as those piece of shit nazi's and skinheads only the other way around. it's a very sad day if this is true.

thank god ignorance still exists because there is that much more to fight for. otherwise life would be boring.
i dont claim to know what it's like to be black but that was NOT the point of what i said. i see everyone as equal regardless if they're entertaining me, and quite frankly music does MORE than entertain me.

Yes, I bothered and I am gonna to keep on bringing it. You are one of the most annoying people on this board. It would not be a day for you on this board if your not making something border line kiss-ass statement to the system or white power stucture.

So you just keep expressing yourself and I will keep telling you where you can go and I don't have to use profanity to do it. Now I think you know where you can put that ham sandwich.

so because someone loves tori amos, madonna, and has an 'american pie' avatar they are kissing the ass of white power? gimme a fuckin break. that is some bullshit right there. white people can love white artists/entertainers/human beings; black people can love blacks; whites can love blacks; and blacks can love whites. it's sooooo not complicated.

and someone is allowed to agree with such a controversial statement as what BlaqueKnight said.

this thread wasn't meant to be about race as much as did this happen or didn't it? and if so is all the stuff that my favorite artist represents through her music a LIE? if BK hadn't called anyone who takes offense to "Fuck White People" a whiny bitch for being offended (i think he meant WHITE whiny bitch)...
anyway i love ALL COLORS EQUALLY. anyone who doesn't feel the same doesn't deserve to enter my consciousness. and it hurts me equally for any one to say FUCK ALL _____ whether it's jews, gays, lesbians, blacks, whites, native americans, asians, latinos, midgets...whomever. and that aint PC bullshit it's the truth. there is such a bad combination of ignorance and arrogance among SOME people who have posted their points of view in this thread it really shocks me and more saddens me.

That sentiment ("F____ White People") is hardly new. And, if it truly can be attributed to Badu, the twisted part is it has become a punchline in America (as has much of what pertains to Black rage in America).

Don't believe me? Check out Sprint's latest commercial:

You know a friend of mine met her who happens to be a bi-racial black woman(Ethiopian & Italian) to be more specific...Badu did shunned her in a rude way and was more endearing torwards those who appeared more blacker...my friend was like like "WTF is her problem? shit my daddy is ethiopian I am more african then her since she want's to be on that tip" so it doesn't suprise me...but I still love her music.
I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.
I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish.

I wonder if the folks here who are so "understanding" of Ms Badu's (alleged) comments, were equally forgiving to Axl Rose in the late 1980s , when he was accused of racism and hung out to dry ?? Somehow, I doubt it ....

-----
He was not accused of racism. It was in his songs. "N***gers and F***GS get out my way" that is a line of out of Guns and Roses song and still some record company nut gave this fools millions to record a follow up record that will never be put out.

But did anybody try to understand the context of what he was saying here ? Did he get the benefit of the doubt ? Uhhh.... NO !! A double-standard, for sure

exactly, if it was the other way round this thread would be in uproar. most people dont really care about this and are saying 'oh thats not nice' or 'that sucks' just to be polite. and to be completely honest i wouldnt give a crap either if there wasnt such a double standard, thats the main thing that gets on my nerves.

I didn't turn it into something fucked up. I just responded to your notion that she should have kept her mouth shut about her feelings because she has some white fans. Maybe she doesn't want to be a minstrel show for them. Maybe she doesn't make her music for them. Most, if not all, soul artists don't make their music and message for white people.

She's denied saying it, right? But doesn't she belong to some radical, more righteous than thou offshoot of the Nation of Islam called the Five Percenters or the Fruit of Islam, or something, which states that only five percent of black people will be saved from the apocalpyse or whenever the NOI's mothership comes down to earth?

At the height of the Fugees popularity, Lauryn Hill was accused of saying that she didn't want any white people at her shows. Guess what? Turned out she never said that either.

I think you'll find that this story is bullshit. But if it IS true, then she's an ignorant, hateful dickhead and I'll toss her records out of my window in a flash ...
