In concert he mentions Fats Domino when he sings this song, and it is an obvious tribute to him.

Anyone who thinks Paul wasn't a good singer should hear that song.

Funny, though, there's a story about how he had to sing the song day after day to finally get it right. He would go to the studio early in the morning and record a lead vocal. He commented at the time on how a few years earlier it would have been no problem. Of course, a few years earlier, the Beatles didn't record in the morning.

He thought that the morning would give him that rough sound he wanted, but as a singer, I believe it's easier to achieve that sound later on, after you've sung all day and are completely warmed up. That's how Lennon did Twist & Shout, after all. I wonder if anyone suggested it to him at the time. I'm amazed he didn't know it himself, but I guess the proof is in the pudding, and the song turned out just fine.

Apparently one of the big bones of contention during the Abbey Road recordings was that John was pissed off that Paul never asked him to sing this song as he thought it would have been perfect for him. Shows how petty and paranoid they all became in the end.

Now, that would have made it into a song I could have loved...

I am going to listen to it NOW. I love to listen to songs with new insights...

john did sing it with him in the anthology version. It was in the same style singing (duet type harmony) as some of the tracks on the let it be album.

I just think it fit better with paul doin it alone..

Interesting, if I imagine John singing this, it becomes a Lennon song, much like Don't Let Me Down or the early version of Mind Games.

Paul & John were very similar in many ways, a reason their partnership lasted as long as it did.

When someone badmouths him as a singer I put on The White Album, and as he sings the final "Why don't we do it in the road...to...who knows how long I've loved you?" I say "That's the same guy."

wink Agreed.. and I think the white album songs contained great moments for paul.. I LOVE lennon's contributions as well.. but paul pulled through to show a really interesting side during this era

Helter Skelter is a shining moment for paul in my book.. and so is "martha my dear" im a huge fan of his english work..
