i think if people know how to make good beats and can hold listeners' attention with catchy/fun/funny lyrics, why not? every song doesn't have to be 'bohemian rhapsody' or 'axis: bold as love' and every album doesn't have to be 'ok computer' or 'abbey road'. in fact, sometimes it's refreshing to hear something that's just dumb, simple and catchy as hell.

Thank u, Anxiety! Some of these Orgers act like total music snobs. There is a place for frivolity in art and in music. Everything doesnt have to be earth shatteringly serious all the time. Sometimes I want to cut lose and dance to a goofy fun song with a hot beat. Like Sade said, is it a crime? neutral

thats true...but when i was growing up...me and all the cats i knew were down with prince and the time...and we all wanted to play as well as them...and we spent evenings watching videos of them and figuring out chords and sounds...thats a far cry from todays kids trying to get a litle BLING legally or illegally...while looking up to pop stars on mtv with ZERO musical ability...but things change i guess... neutral

ok, well, think about it this way:

when *I* was a kid, i was nuts about music but the only instrument i knew how to play was the drums, and the only instruments we had in the house was a drum set, a tambourine, and my mom's damn autoharp. lol

so, i used the drum set, and i learned how to fiddle around with the stereo in a way where i could create loops and sound collages and where i could record my voice with weird distortions and whatnot. i couldn't tell ya how i did it today, but i used to record some insane stuff and give it to my friends. it wasn't about wanting to be famous or the bling or anything like that - i just wanted to make some music because i was bored and wanted a creative outlet.

i think if someone can use limited resources/skill and make something that's actually GOOD, then more power to them. this isn't to say that people who can create grand, complex, "BIG" music aren't valid...of course they are. i LOVE "big" insane genius virtuoso music. but you don't need all that to make a good song.

Make Up by Vanity 6 is often cited as an early example of proto-electroclash.

meanwhile, there are completely brilliant folks out there making minor masterpieces in their basements, and they'll probably never be heard because they either don't know how or are unwilling to play into that kind of BS.
