i think seal has a great voice. it's just that, aside from his first album and a few songs on his second album, his material is watered down adult contemporary pap. that's not the fault of his voice - that's the fault of his pen (or whoever's pens...).

i think protools sound great on just about any record, i agree. nod

ya think? well, okay. madonna should invest in the ProToolsLive package, because seal seems to be using it to make him sound good in concert, too. biggrin

Nope. Seal's whack. Got Heidi Klum, but so did her hairdresser. The man can't sing. Face it. Bob Marley either. I know you don't like it, they're legends, they're music is classic, but guess what. That don't change the empirical fact that both of them sound like your drunk uncle Bobby when company comes over. Thanks.

So who do you like as a singer??? Let me guess, Mariah Carey (LOL)....

Nope. This guy.

http://www.robinthicke.com/watch/

And Prince. And George Michael and Kenna and Bilal and Tonex and people who sound GOOD. Live and on record. Not scratchy by accident. Not flat and sharp. Not monotone. Not shitty. Not boring. Good singers. Not Seal. though kiss from a rose was passable. Just never heard it live. But I did hear his Unplugged album where he ended damn near every song the same way.

If you want to find people who can't sing, or compile a list, all you have to do is go to BET, or go to the R&B section of Billboard magazine, and take your pick.

R&B is one of those genres, like Gospel, Country, and Standard/Classical, that requires great vocals, and most of these guys coming out today, mainly the young boys and girls, can't sing.

I was watching this guy name Bobby Valentine, I think that's his name, but he was sing some Christmas song, and this man couldn't hold a note, he was out of breath, and his vocal quality was shit.

But that's the R&B scene nowadays. Rock music and pop/dance music doesn't really require great vocals, it's just an added bonus. Look at the history of rock and roll, Bruce Springteen, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, shitty vocalist, but they're Hall of Famers and Legends. That's why I'll let them pass, and I'll let dancers/performers with weak vocals like Madonna or Janet Jackson pass.

During the late '90's, Bono intentionally killed his voice with cigarettes and booze. He wanted a raspier quality to give his singing some "weight". The man can still emote like a motherfucker. In fact, he's said that the only reason he can still hit those high notes is because he gets inside of those songs. He still believes those lyrics. Obviously we all have different tastes in singers, but Bono is my favorite voice ever, especially because he believes in what he sings.

The bolded makes me falloff

He drank and smoked intentionally for his voice? falloff

IMO, this man is selling a product and you are buying.

What sounds better? I'm practicing and working my vocal chords every day on tour to hit high notes or "I believe in what I'm saying".

I'd love to think this man is as good as he sells himself with the level of integrity that it would take someone to mean it everytime he sings songs over and over, but I've just got to draw the line somewhere.

I agree with 124 posts for the most part but my pick is David Lee Roth.

I grew up on early VH and I was young but I made the assumption that DLR was what he recorded. Wrong. He forgot words, barely sung important parts and was just a drunk. Sammy was/is the real deal as far as a vocalist.

Well, I'm glad that I don't really give two shits about what "your opinion" is. I'm far from a little U2 fanboy that buys into all of their hype. What I do know are facts about the band, though. In the '80's Bono was never satisfied with his voice. He thought it didn't carry enough "weight", and was too pitchy. He always admired the raspier sound of other rock singers. Right around 1991, Bono decided to pick up smoking on the advice that it would give some grit to his voice.

Don't believe me? Pick up "U2 at the End of the World". It was written by a man who followed the band around on their entire Zoo TV World Tour. He witnessed this first hand.

It is common knowledge in the U2 community that around 1993, Bono's voice began to change, and many would consider it for the worst. Go snoop around on their forums, and most attribute it to the smoking habit that he picked up a little earlier.

Beyonce is a bleater. Can't stand her singing.

I think she´s great. Her performance of Dangerously in Love on VH1 Divas in 2004 (I think) brought tears to my eyes. It was breathtaking. I was amazed. It was after a VERY long time that someone made me feel that way when singing.

And X-tina is good live - I think. Saw her DVD concert and it was great. She sings great the ballads where she doesn´t have to dance and move that much.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

O.K., O.K., Bono walks the talk, great.

I'm not dissing the guy, I just find it all hard to believe (no matter what writer, film maker or fan has to say) but "the U2 community" has spoken and that's that. The End.

Oh , well;

Bjork
Alanis Morissette
Matt Bellamy

i can see how she's not everyone's cuppa tea, but i think bjork has an amazing voice. she can do things with her pipes that few other vocalists can, and she's very precise with her style of singing...and she holds up damn well in concert.

Now folks are talkin' about Seal??? Bob Marley??? Good Lord.
I truly appreciate the vast differences in all our tastes and preferences, but to say that many of the responses here are surprising would be a huge understatement. Anywho, this thread goes to show that some of us have very specific expectations of what we want from a "singer" and what we hope to "feel" from them. Very edifying, in a way.
