British Urban Music

I've been listening to a lot of British Urban music recently and some of it is amazing. Yeah, I know "urban" is a lame term, but I couldn't think of a better word which covers R&B, Rare Groove, Funk, Acid Jazz etcetera...

Here's some of my top picks...

Body Talk by Imagination.
Slinky bass, catatonic piano riffs and a really sexy after-midnight vibe. It really doesn't sound dated at all. This could easily have crossed into sleazy cheese but the falsetto vocal makes it sound more delicate than threatening. Imagination's Just An Illusion was recently interpolated into Mariah's Get Your Number.

Change by Lisa Stansfield.
Amazing voice and a classic tune. Most of her stuff is good but the production on her first album sounds very of it's time when played today. Where is Lisa now? She's fantastic! This song sounds like sticking your head out of the car window at 90mph. It's exhilerating.

By Your Side by Sade.
Dissed as coffee-table music by many but the first time I heard this song it made me cry. Sometimes, less is more and Sade does this impeccably every time.

There's Nothing Like This by Omar.
The synth-strings sound a little twee in retrospect but the overall groove is fantastic. Sounds like the lovechild of Lover's Rock and Mellow Jazz.

Never Stop by Brand New Heavies.
Yeah, I know N'Dea Davenport isn't a Brit but the rest of them are. It's like bottled sunshine. It's so infectious. I love it. I really love it. Frontmen of the Acid Jazz scene of the early 90s.

We Got Music] by Incognito.
It sounds like a roller disco. It's just so fucking exciting.

Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack.
Inventors of the Trip Hop genre. My jaw dropped the first time I heard this. It was soulful, orchestral, loop-driven and intense. The Nellee Hooper 7" remix is divine - its the sound of dancing in a puddle in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Keep On Moving by Soul II Soul.
It's so laid back that it could easily dissolve into elevator muzak but the combination of beats and strings keeps your interest throughout.
