British public names "Thriller" Best Music Video

Thriller is named best music video

Sunday December 11, 09:58 AM

Michael Jackson's Thriller has been named the favourite music video of all time.

The scary scenes beat competition from Eminem's Stan and Madonna's Like a Prayer.

Robbie Williams' Rock DJ made fourth place, followed by Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer.

When Thriller came out in 1983 it was the first big budget music video or short film, featuring all the latest special effects of the time.

The list of most memorable videos was voted for by the British public.

Vikki Timmons, spokeswomen for digital music channel The Box, which is broadcasting the video countdown, said: "Thriller was an instant hit in 1983 when it was released and it was well ahead of its time.

"It's amazing to think that although there have been huge advances in technology and some amazing new music videos over the past few years, Thriller still tops the list."

More than 7,000 votes were cast in The Box's search for the top 100 Greatest Music Videos of All Time.

1. Michael Jackson (Thriller)
2. Eminem (Stan)
3. Madonna (Like A Prayer)
4. Robbie Williams (Rock DJ)
5. Peter Gabriel (Sledgehammer)
6. Kylie Minogue (Can`t Get You Out Of My Head)
7. A-Ha (Take On Me)
8. Spice Girls (Wannabe)
9. Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody)
10. The Prodigy (Smack My Bitch Up)

BTW, I think for 2005, Michael will have the #1 video download worldwide on the iTunes Music Store.

"Thriller" is still #1 in the UK, #1 in France, #3 in Canada, #3 in Germany, and #12 in the USA (after being in the Top 5 since it became available).

It will be very interesting to see how much the video has sold once/if iTunes releases those figures.

Hmm, I remember Duran Duran's videos beating this one at the first-ever Grammy awards that featured a video category... hmmm

But Brits probably hate them in much the same way they hate Mr. Williams... that self-loathing race. shrug

Really? Thriller won the Grammy for best long form video at the 1985 awards.

Anyway, Duran Duran got the outstanding achievement honour at last year's Brits.

woot! As it should be.

I remember Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller up for awards in '85... As well as Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf and Girls on Film. Does that sound right? But I only remember one award.

That's not really possible, because Billie Jean and Beat It would have been up for awards in 1984. Thriller missed the deadline and carried over to 1985.

I thought '85 was the first year for awards? It was a new category.

Yes, I remember thinking it odd at the time of the awards. I had saved a clipping of this, but can no longer find it.

I just checked. Duran Duran won their Grammys for their videos in 1984. The Grammy website is all fucked up though because they're all a year out (e.g. MJ's big sweep is down as '83 instead of '84)

I thought Olivia Newton John was the first recipient of a Grammy for a music video neutral That would have been the 1982 ceremony.

I'm going to take a look at that. What I've told you is just what I remember personally (not very well, apparently).

Yes biggrin Was 'Can You Feel It' even nominated then? I have no idea. As supposedly "revolutionary" that was, I prefer 'Physical' nod
