That's What Friends Are For - Dionne, Stevie, Elton, Gladys

Yeah, I know. rolleyes

Soppy, saccharine, drips with schmaltz.

But I love it! touched

Here's a test: go out with your mates tonight, have a few drinks, come home and stick this on. You'll be a'hugging and a'kissing before you know it. This track was made for singalongs.

Feel it, people!

rolleyes

I wondered when the Haters would crawl out!

lol hug (Just kidding).

C'mon, man - that harmonica, Dionne's sultry vocals, Gladys (who doesn't get enough lines) and a plaintive melody. The only bit I'm not so keen on is Elton bellowing "Keeeeep smiiiiilin', keeeeep shiiiiinin'". confused Give it a rest.

Grab some random people tonight, take them home and force them to listen to this. There'll be sweet lovin' going on in your living room tonight, I guarantee. thumbs up!

Okay, the melody is good, Dionne owns that song. Do you know Dionne, Gladys and Patti LaBelles` "superwoman"? It`s not nearly as good as the Karyn White version, but i like how their vocals sound together.

Sorry for changing the subject.. lol

You haters are so devious with your thread-jacking methods. lol

No, I don't know that one. hmmm Dionne DOES own this song, yes. Someone obviously told Elton that he should bellow every time it's his line. disbelief Ssssh!

I really like this track and was dissapointed it doesn't show up on Stevie's boxed set (along with a lot of other notable tracks). Guess that the set was a Motown only affair.

This song was played at a friend's mother's funeral a few years ago. Ever since then, it makes me completely depressed.

although i like the original rod stewart version from "night Shift" better...the four of them sang it together at the kennedey center in DC at an AIDS benefit in 1988 or 89--the concert came on Showtime, i think. I remember Nancy Wilson, Barry Mannilow, Expose' Mary Wilson and like a whole lot of people were performing, Anyways, Elton wasn't supposed to make it to the show, but he flew all the way in fom England and got there just before the end of the show. Dionne started crying and even though you could tell Elton was singing the lyrics off of a piece of paper in his hand...that was like one of the most electrifying performances i've ever seen. hell, i was crying. cry they were all in very good voice that night.. i wish i could find that tape sad

"That's What Friends are Here For"

Washington Post (06/13/88), P. D1
Swisher, Kara

-----
Abstract: A last-minute change of plans enabled Elton John to join Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder to sing their 1986 hit, "That's What Friends Are For," at a Kennedy Center concert highlighting an AIDS Benefit Gala Weekend in Washington, D.C. The song has raised $1.5 million for research on the disease. Lena Horne, Sugar Ray Leonard, ex-supreme Mary Wilson, and many other stars joined event organizer Warwick to top off a weekend of fund-raising events. The goal of the activities is to raise $5 million for the Washington, D.C., Warwick Foundation, which will fund community-based AIDS education programs. House of Representatives Speaker Jim Wright talked to guests at a Hyatt Hotel fund-raiser Saturday night about congressional efforts to fight AIDS.

THAT'S the one!

Disc 1, all the tracks - genius, hands-down. worship

Disc 2 (tracks 27 onwards) - some great tracks, especially the Barry Gibb ones. (Heartbreaker, All The Love In The World, Our Day Will Come).

I made a copy for a mate once and she still goes on about it. Highly recommended. thumbs up!

One of my favorite Bacharach/David songs recorded by Dionne is "Wives and lovers"
"This empty place" is also missing, it`s a good song, but Stephanie Mills` version is 10 times as good!! dancing jig
