Hey! Hope you are doing well - judging by the pic of you and your b/f you're very happy biggrin He looks like Josh Brolin!

I am doing well. Good to see you've got time to stop by. And Josh Brolin? lol That's a first. I usually hear Ethan Hawk and sometimes Josh Hartnett (I don't see either). But hey, if it's Josh Brolin, maybe he can introduce me to Diane Lane. love2

Oh, yeah, that's right, you're the sensitive ones. lol

And, no, they don't (at least not on the org). MJ is loved on the org. This thread is proof.

Loved and hated in equal measure, perhaps. Often by the same people. lol

Ah well. There's never been an artist that everyone has liked. Never will be.

Even The Beatles & Elvis have their detractors.

I've really gone off both of the Jacksons in the past few years, but I'd have to reverse the trend and say that I prefer Janet's work to Michael's.

Both artists have started to rely way too much on their past formulas, and both seem stuck in different stages of development (Michael in his childhood, Janet in her sexual awakening). Janet, however, has been more consistent with her albums, has toured more frequently, has kept some of her "edge", and has made better videos.

Obviously, I'm not going to argue that Janet is a better singer; Michael has her there (but so does almost every other member of the Jackson family lol).
One thing I will say for her is that she isn't guilty of overusing those vocal affectations that Michael's singing is now solely comprised of (hee-hees, shamons, grunting).

I think that both have gotten lazy in their dancing, but at least Janet doesn't do the exact same moves ad naseum.

As far as musicianship is concerned, I really wouldn't know how to judge that. Same goes for production (MJ has only produced a handful of songs on his own, and Janet hasn't done any).

I don't think either artist is a great songwriter, either. I think since Renee left Janet's camp, her lyrics have gotten worse (coincidence?). Michael's lyrics have never been his strong suit, IMO.

Finally, I'd rather sleep with Janet.

Just because they're family doesn't mean we have to like them. If that were the case movies about women who hate their mother in laws wouldn't dominate the box office.

I like Janet though, just not nearly as much as I love MJ, hehe aaow!!! biggrin

Here's my 2 cents:

Michael: Great vocalist and entertainer. Technically, he's more talented than Janet. However, his albums are more for mass consumption rather than artistic effort, and he hasn't been really consistant.

Janet: Not an amazing voice, but she's put out some hotter albums than Michael. Hell, The Velvet Rope wipes out everything Mike did after Thriller. She's been a little more consistant with her work.

Overall, Both kick ass, though Janet has progressed alot more than Mike as of late

I love that album. It's gorgeous. I don't think it's dated (other than "Empty"). For me, Michael's post-Thriller has dated very very badly. Most of Janet's stuff has weathered the years well.

ima have to disagree on one tip...RN1814 sounds hella dated. the most late 80s/early 90s sound POSSIBLE.

other than that i agree...Control, Janet, and TVR all sound fresh as they did the day the dropped (well...almost).

You really think Go Deep hasn't dated? It sounds like some amateur cut from 1992.

HIStory on the other hand. 10 years old already? Woah!

Yes, RN has dated the worst. It still is nowhere near Bad in terms of datedness, though.

Really? I think HIStory sounds hella old...guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

And no, I don't think Go Deep sounds like 1992. 1992 was really bad. thesexofit would not listen to Go Deep. sad

See, I like Bad. It's the only MJ album really representative of the time it was made, because of the synths, but the remasters sound amazing.

The only thing I really can't get past with Janet is her excessive use of samples. 1 or 2, fine, but it's like now the entire songs are just based around the samples, and it's every damn song.

I think TVR is one of the rare albums that is both overrated by fans and underrated by critics. On one hand, the music is often incredible. I'd say it's by far the richest Janet album, musically. Jimmy and Terry really did an excellent job with this disc. This was also the last occurence of truly good lyrics on a Janet album ("You", "Got Til It's Gone", "What About", "Can't Be Stopped"). Afterwards, nothing has been as poignant or honest.

On the other hand, Janet's "messages", while honorable, are also quite sophomoric. Yes, it's OK to be gay, and we all do need to love ourselves more, but if "Free Xone" and "Special" are all she has to say on the issues, I'd rather she didn't comment at all.

This was also the album where the interludes started detracting from the overall music. They were great on RN1814 and only mildly intrusive on Janet, but by TVR they really started to grate.

Of course, when compared with HIStory, I'd have to say that TVR is leagues ahead, lyrically at least. "Stranger in Moscow" and "Tabloid Junkie" aside, HIStory has some of MJ's stupidest and most bizarre lyrics: "What about elephants, have we lost their trust", "Everybody dog food", "Tom Sneddon is a cold man"...

Both Mike and Janet definitely have a sniveling side, and they were exposed on these albums. "Childhood" and "Special" were both born out of the same whiny, mawkish place.

It's so strange how we differ. While you pick out Stranger In Moscow and Tabloid Junkie as notable HIStory tracks, Stranger In Moscow is my all time favourite, but TJ is one I can sort of take or leave. I love the lyrics, but it's not one I listen to that often.

Free Xone is damn funky, but if you listen to the songs it samples, there's VERY little that's actually been done with it. While Rhythm Nation used Sly Stone to great effect, Jam & Lewis' picks of the samples got quite inspired later on, but more lazy and more frequent. Janet's albums to me are more a collection of "tracks" than "songs". I see a difference anyway.

Also, the sampling started getting a bit out-of-hand by this time, IMO, even if they still meshed really well with the original soundscapes.

Although I gotta disagree about the "janet." interludes-- having an interlude before nearly every damn song on that record made it pure hell to sit all the way through, great as much of the music still is.

HIStory has some of MJ's stupidest and most bizarre lyrics: "What about elephants, have we lost their trust", "Everybody dog food", "Tom Sneddon is a cold man"...
