I have NO SHAME when it comes to prefessing my love for "JT period" Kool & The Gang.

Same here.I love the 80s Kool and The Gang.People always insist that they "sold out" during this period (whatever that means),but I enjoy songs like "Get Down On It","Misled","Joanna","Tonight" and most of their other 80s singles.James "JT" Taylor was their best lead singer.

People probaly said that because of their croosover in pop. Joanna , Misled sould more like a pop song than r&b. But the style of music especially r&b changed in the 80s. Funk music was almost dead in the 80s.

any fans of them pre jt/post jt
should check out their 40th anniversary dvd
disc one made me wanna puke (not a fan of old-school funk concerts)
disc two is the funky stuff!!!
disc 2 has a documentary with some great stuff from kool and khalil
not gonna ruin all of the surprises
ok i will give one: khalil describes the secrets behind most of the hit songs
joanna was nothing but maniac slowed down..yep that's right

theres also a show from the cafe wha w/all of the original members!!
minor keys and drugs don't make a rollerskate jam

i loved the second disc
just hearing them do sea of tranquility was worth the price alone

like i said b4 there's some insight 2 the jt years and their strategy
after watching it, these dudes were very very smart
some might call them sell-outs
heck i even did (yep i'm a summer madness kinda guy)
plus,i grew up in cleveland...i hate celebration with a PASSION
(clevelander's will know what i am talking about)

After having a conversation with Khalis when they were transferring their analog 24-trk masters to a digital format, I knew they weren't "sellouts" but shrewd businessmen.

That being said, I still prefer their pre-JT era. lol

The Cafe Wha thing has me really interested in getting this DVD now.

Thanks for the info. thumbs up!

I'm one of those snobs that prefers their pre-JT albums. Get Down on It is a good tune, and probably the best of their 80s work. I can like most of their big hits. The only one I can't stomach is Celebration. That shit is unlistenable.
