while it's hip to show your love for the funky pre JT version of Kool & The Gang around here, you could get some heavy disses for admitting that you enjoy their most commercial period as well. but I don't care biggrin I love that jam! dancing jig

I have NO SHAME when it comes to prefessing my love for "JT period" Kool & The Gang. Not only did I grow up on that music, but they were my first concert too. It's all good.

exactly nod I discovered their earlier records just afterwards, and the late 70s and early 80s was the time that shaped my "musical profile" and taste. and this indlucded those eras K&TG albums

I grew up on "Can't Get Enough of that Funky Stuff" & "Jungle Boogie". With the exception of a few songs, the 80s stuff doesn't do it for me. You won't find 'Rosanna' in my collection.

I like this song a lot but the old school stations have played this song out big time. Every time I turn on a old school R & B station, this song comes on, especially when I was in San Diego, but it's still a classic.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

On my parents' wedding reception video, there's a part where "Get Down on It" is playing and you just see all of the old people getting down on it. I always think of that whenever I hear that song. lol

I don't have any albums from Kool & the Gang and I know most folks here have stated that James " JT " Taylor was the worst thing to happen to the group, but without him, they would have been forgotten about like many other seventies band.

No heavy disses here.

I've simply stated in the past that I personally prefer the more raw, funky, less commercial pre-JT material.

Folks should like what they like and Get Down On It. wink

Maybe so.

But they'd only be forgotten about by folks that didn't know they had 5 FUNKY albums even before their 1st crossover hit Funky Stuff (without JT). smile

They'd also know that the Godfather himself said, "They're the second-baddest out there...They make such bad records that you got to be careful when you play a new tape on the way home from the record store. Their groove is so strong you could wreck." cool

oh, I wasn't refering to you, not at all! I know you you are the last person on earth to diss anybody because of their muscial taste nod ...even the ones that deserve it biggrin but if I had a special orger in my mind at all, an orger with some awkard attitude towards differnt musical preferences and with K&TG disses, then this orger shall remain unnamed, and he's very much absent these days since quite a while anyway smile

oh, and I prefer their earlier output too, so it's all good highfive

I agree . From 1977 -78 I notice Kool & the Gang did not have any albums on the billboard charts. I wondered did Kool & the Gang have albums in those years. I ran up on a site that stated they had 2 or 3 albums. I guess they did not get that many review on them.

I had looked thru my dads collection of albums and found 2 before Wild and PeaceFul. Their first 1 which was released in 1969. Then they had 2 live albums plus Music is the Message, Good Times which was a c.d.

this is an old School classic headbang

from their excellent 1981 album 'Something Special',which is probably their finest 80s album. Also contains jams like "Steppin Out","Take My Heart" and the wonderful slow jam "No Show",which shoulda been a single.

Same here.I love the 80s Kool and The Gang.People always insist that they "sold out" during this period (whatever that means),but I enjoy songs like "Get Down On It","Misled","Joanna","Tonight" and most of their other 80s singles.James "JT" Taylor was their best lead singer.
