Yeah, I remember "Soul Finger" and other Barkays jams like "AJ The Housefly" when they were on the Stax label.

The strange thing is, The Barkays got on the Mercury label in 1976 and a few years later, while they were still in the middle of continuing on Mercury, they released "Holy Ghost" on Stax. Maybe they were finishing a contract with Stax?

That was probably just Stax releasing previously unreleased material after the band's Mercury material got hot.

You're exactly right. I just pulled my "Best Of The Barkays" CD (the Stax compilation) and this is what was in the linear notes:

With the addition of a vocalist, The Barkays evolved during the early seventies from being a primarily instrumental band into a self-contained unit in the tradition of Sly and the Family Stone. Along with such groups as the Ohio Players and the Commodores, The Barkays pioneered a genre initially called "black rock" later known simply as "funk". Dressed eccentrically (several members sported blonde wigs and Dodson even appeared onstage with a live boa constrictor around his neck), they played louder than traditional soul bands and added heavy doses of rock guitar.

Evidence of The Barkays' bold new direction didn't reach the airwaves, however, until they signed with Mercury in 1976 and scored big with "Shake Your Rump To The Funk". Although the group continued to record for Stax/Volt between 1973 and 1975, their output remained in the can. "Holy Ghost", featuring Dodson's urgent vocal, didn't see the light of day until the tapes from this period were acquired by Fantasy Records and it was released in 1978 as the single from an album titled "Money Talks".

They're not the 1st band this has happened to.
Like the album says, "Money Talks" cool

The Stax stuff was bangin'.
Much more raw than the stuff on Mercury IMO.
