Pre Rubber Soul Beatles (1962-1965)

Are there any fans out there of the Beatles work before Rubber Soul? It seems like a lot of folks write off that era of the band. Sure, the music wasn't as "sophisticated" as the later stuff, but most of it was great. I think A Hard Day's Night and Help! (the albums) are two of their very best.Anyone else think that era is unfairly neglected? (if you can say that about any era of the Beatles)

I dont write it off or anything, but the consistancy began with rubber soul.. when u listen to those records (ruber soul and so forth) you begin to hear how they really sound..

but hey, I love all their stuff.. I just listen more to their music as they got older.. within the late 60's..

Some of my favorite Beatles songs are from this period...

I Saw Her Standing There
All My Loving
I Wanna Be Your Man
I Want To Hold Your Hand
You Can't Do That
Hard Day's Night
I'm Happy Just To Dance With You
Tell Me Why
Things We Said Today
If I Fell
Any Time At All
No Reply
I'll Follow The Sun
Eight Days A Week
I Don't Want To Spoil The Party
She's A Woman
Help!
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
Ticket To Ride
I've Just Seen A Face
Yesterday

...All great POP tunes, sophisticated or not.

I agree. Help and a Hard days night laid the ground work for rubber soul and everything after.

Me too. I grew up on that stuff and it still reminds me of the wonder and comfort of childhood.

I never just wrote it off or anything, but I do have to admit
that when I listened to their music the tunes I fell in love
with were from Rubber Soul onward.

There are very good and cool song among the earlier stuff but
there's something about their sound and I don't know, it's so
hard to explain.

Perhaps they sound more mature, maybe that's it for me.

I put A Hard Days Night up there with their best records. Very consistent, full of classics, and they wrote every song for the first time.

Basically every Beatles album is a five star classic, but here's how I rate them in context of classics.

Please Please Me star star star star
With the Beatles star star star star
A Hard Days Night star star star star star
Beatles for Sale star star star
Help star star star star

TA had a bunch of great tracks, I'll just add:

It Won't Be Long
Please Please Me
Can't Buy Me Love
I'm a Loser
Don't Bother Me
She Loves You
I Should Have Known Better
All I've Got To Do
