Paul Williams Appreciation Thread

This dude was HUGE in the '70s, but seemed to completely evaporate when the 80s came around...personally, I kinda miss having a dumpy midget with aviator glasses being one of the biggest celebrities on TV. Whatever happened to Paul Williams?!? And how did he get SO famous in the first place?

lol The BF and I were just talking about him the other day. He was in some documentary I was watching about The Carpenters, and I couldn't place him.

Most people remember him from role as 'cousin Oliver' in the Brady Brunch.

Of the tunes he wrote for The Carpenters, those are my favorite (especially I Won't Last a Day Without You). We've Only Just Begun was a jingle for a bank before it became a pop song.

I didn't know he wrote "Out In The Country"

Can you imagine his and Leon Rusell's royalty checks? (Leon wrote "Superstar" and "This Masquarade" among many others.

nod Leon is a great songwriter, but I'm not a huge fan of him as a performer. Donny Hathaway's take on A Song for You is a favorite recording of mine, and I don't really care a whole lot for Leon's. neutral

I thought this thread was about Paul Williams of the Temptations.

Paul Williams was a MONSTER songwriter in the '70's. Most people think of his cheesy tv appearances. After I got into studying/playing music, I came away with a newfound respect for him and Neil Diamond. They both make their initial marks as songwriters, where they get plenty respect/royalty checks...

Shoot, add Paul Anka to the list, too.

I have an album of love songs that he did back in the seventies. He has a strange voice, but his lyrics are wonderful.

Now I have to go to my Mom's house and find that record.
