***in 1980,Diana Ross entered the recording studio with Niles Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic. They were producing her 'Diana' album. But when the album was finished,Diana wasn't pleased with it.She wanted her vocals to be higher in the mix,and wanted the album to sound more like a "Diana Ross record" and less like a "Chic record".So,without telling Niles and Bernard, she had the album remixed to her satisfaction.

***while performing the song "Muscles" in concert, she would introduce the song by saying "Michael Jackson wrote this song for me,and I don't know if it's his fantasy or mine" lol

And after listening to the special edition of this album, I have to say she made the right call. Her vocals on the original sounded almost incidental.

***surprisingly,Diana didn't cause any drama on her VH-1 Divas special from a few years ago.The backstage drama was actually caused by two of the performers: Donna Summer and Mariah Carey.Donna was sitting in her dressing room, getting ready, when Mariah and her entourage showed up."That's MY room!" Mariah said.Apparently, there was a mistake and Donna was given the wrong room. Not really a big deal, but Mariah persisted and finally, the producers made Donna move to another room. She was pissed and refused to acknowledge Mariah during the show.Diana wanted Donna to join her and Mariah for a Supremes medley, but Donna flat out refused.

True.It just surprises me that Diana was "drama-free" that night lol

I expected to hear tales of some crazy backstage fight, considering her reputation.

I wish I could remember the exact details but I saw an article/interview (?) with Nile Rogers once where he described the recording of 'Diana'. Apparently, he and Bernard thought some vocals needed re-recording but were unsure how to approach the issue. The conversation went something like this:

Nile - Um, Diana, would it be possible to re-record that line?

Diana - Why would I want to do that?

Nile - Um, it's just that it's a little... off-register

Diana - Are you saying my singing's out of tune???

Nile - Um...

Apparently, Diana stormed out of the studio and they didn't see her for something like three months!

Don't mess with Miss Ross!

I don`t care much for her work in the 80s though. I bought the "swept away" album when it got re-released recently, but i`ve only listened to it once. "missing you" is her best song from the 80s.

It's funny,I think she is one of the few artists of the 60s/70s who actually thrived in the 80s.Beginning with 1980's brilliant 'Diana' album (produced by Chic),she was on a roll. The next album 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' is excellent, and 1984's 'Swept Away' contains some great tracks. She had alot of cool singles in the first half of the decade ("Mirror,Mirror","Muscles","I'm Coming Out","Telephone","Swept Away","Let's Go Up",etc).I agree with you,"Missing You" is her best song of the 80s.

Her decline happened in the mid-80s.Her albums were spotty from that point on.

do you know if there is a compilation of just her 80's singles? i'd love to have soemthing like.

hmmm perhaps. But 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' is an excellent album. There's the hit title track remake....there's "Mirror,Mirror"...there's the sultry, sexy "Sweet Surrender".I think it's her second best 80s album, the best being the 1980 'Diana' album.

are ths songs uptempo on this album? i hate that she has so many slow jams on her albums. i want to boogie!

It wasn't her fault. The entire band was out of tune or something. Plus, you know they didn't auto-tune then.

Hey, they say She's Ross The Boss.

As long as she doesn't become a driving instructor the Legendary Ms. Ross is alright. (In that "All About Eve..... uh, Faye Dunaway playing Joan Crawford kind of way.")

I have that "Greatest Hits--the RCA Years" compilation and it is very good.Contains most of her 80s hits ("Missing You","Why Do Fools Fall In Love","Mirro Mirror","Muscles") but it's missing a few minor hits, such as "Telephone" and "Eaten Alive".

It's amazing that album ever got completed, considering all the drama surrounding the recording sessions lol

But it's an outstanding album, some say it's Diana's finest solo album.Every song could have been a single.

DEFINITELY her best, in my opinion. The songs, the production - it was freakin Chic', for God's sake lol - how can it not be? Wonderful. worship

I love Diana and I'll always buy her material but I wish she'd stop chasing trends and get back to basics. She needs top-drawer songwriters/producers and a bit of 'sparkle'. I hate the way her career has gone the last few years.

She needs to remind everyone who's The Boss! lol

"Friend To Friend" is gorgeous, isn't it?! Wow! That is one of Niles' and Edwards' greatest compositions. No,I don't think it was ever released as a single, which is a shame.I think there were only three singles from this album:

"Upside Down"
"I'm Coming Out"
"My Old Piano"

"Tenderness" and "Now That You're Gone" had "hit single" written all over them.

I never worry too much cos I know she'll always come out with an album at some point. It's just the wait gets longer and longer and the quality, well... it doesn't seem to be the same. But I'll be very happy with that. wink
