An utterly underwhelming Bowie YOUNG AMERICANS reissue is on the way... i just saw this at www.bowieaudio.com, which seemed to beat bowie's official site to the news...?
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
11.16.2005: Young Americans Collectors Edition CD & DVD Release date: March 2006 The zenith of David Bowie's flat-pack soul period, 1975's Young Americans is an incredible and frequently overlooked record. No other Bowie album had spelled out its market so cleanly and crisply in its title. This was an album to be bought at a time when young Americans, after years of mobilising, now had a little disposable income and were ready to party. It was all, supposedly, about "emotional drive." But the album came to represent so much more than that. It is an indirect product of many factors; soul music; politics, both personal and public; sex, drugs and dancing; of downtown New York and uptown Philadelphia. CD: 1. Young Americans 2. Win 3. Fascination 4. Right 5. Somebody Up There Likes Me 6. Across The Universe 7. Can You Hear Me 8. Fame Bonus tracks: 9. John, I’m Only Dancing (Again) 10. Who Can I Be Now? 11. It’s Gonna Be Me (with strings) (previously unreleased) DVD: NB Tracks 1 to 11 on the DVD are audio only. New mixes by legendary Bowie producer Tony Visconti available in 5.1 surround sound (DTS 96/24 and Dolby Digital) and stereo (PCM 48kHz/24 bit). 1. Young Americans 2. Win 3. Fascination 4. Right 5. Somebody Up There Likes Me 6. Across The Universe 7. Can You Hear Me 8. Fame Bonus tracks: 9. John, I’m Only Dancing (Again) 10. Who Can I Be Now? 11. It’s Gonna Be Me (with strings) (previously unreleased) Video: Young Americans (from Dick Cavett TV show) 1984 (from Dick Cavett TV show) Young Americans spent almost a year in the US charts, reaching Number 9 in the process. It was not the album that broke Bowie in America – that award must go to Diamond Dogs, which had actually made the US Top 5 the previous year - but it was certainly the one that consolidated his American success and allowed him, unlike Bolan and Roxy Music, to join Rod and Elton in the ranks of the Stateside superstars. With Young Americans, Bowie had succeeded in breaking black music into the white mainstream. In the UK, Young Americans' commercial impact, compared to the creative, was less marked . A Number 2 placing meant that it was Bowie's first studio album for three years not to reach the top spot, Yet, the album's legacy would be profound. For the next decade, white soul boys up and down the land would look to Bowie’s cool version of Americana and revolutionise British pop in the process. Bowie’s soul boy look and haircut, later to be known as ‘the wedge’, became the hallmarks of classic clubland cool, not just for the soul boys themselves but also in the New Romantic era. It is not often that an album has both a musical, cultural and subcultural impact. Young Americans was one of those era-defining records that changed the history of popular music. There's SO MUCH MATERIAL they're sitting on....WHY?!

I seriously hope this is a fake announcement, because it's too crummy to be true. Why put two video performances of "Diamond Dogs" songs and not include "Footstompin'" and "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate"? That was some straight up FUNK, complete with pimp suit, cane, and Eva Cherry shaking her moneymaker! Duh. I hope they reconsider. They could fill a disc with outtakes.

They delayed this a year for what? It'll be nice to have 'John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)' back in circulation, but I'm sure most Bowie fans have that anyway. 'Who Can I Be Now' was back on the Ryko reissue, right? This really is a weak excuse for an anniversary edition of something.
I wasn't planning on picking this up anyway, but I had intended on buying the Station to Station reissue as it's my favorite Bowie album. If this is all of the effort they're going to put into it, I'm not sure that I'll bother. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Well, that is one of my favorite Bowie songs and it'll be nice to hear the additional strings, but yeah, this is kinda weak. Where's "After Today"? They could finally clear up what the difference is between the '75 and '76 versions of "It's So Hard to Be a Saint in the City" by including them on the next 2 remasters. There are the Astronettes songs. There are alternate versions of "Somebody Up There Likes Me" and a few others. There's "Footstompin'" What about "Fame '90"? I'm sure I'll never get my way and hear the unreleased material from "The Man Who Fell To Earth" either. This was the re-issue I was most excited about. It definitely could've been better.

i did totally miss it at bowienet...usually there's a bit more fanfare over there when one of the reissues is announced. there was more noise for the 'stage' and 'david live' reissues than for YA.

bowie's always been somewhat prolific. even when he's not putting out new stuff, he's letting his old stuff get re-released...even if it's the same ol' thing in brand new drag.

I'd read it more at Gary Numan than at Duran, b/c Duran Duran didn't really reach prominance until 1981, after teh song had already been released. It's often been said that Bowie was less than pleased about Numan's appropriation of Bowie's Thin White Duke persona. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

I thought I'd read about several occasions where Numan slagged off Bowie in the press and that's why Bowie wasn't fond of him.
