John Mayer Trio-Try!

Just picked up this new album by the John Mayer Trio (Mayer, bassist Pino Palladino, and drummer Steve Jordan) and it's incredible! Definitely a new sound for Mayer and an album that will separate the true fans from the ones who only liked him for stuff like, "Your Body Is A Wonderland." This record is bluesy, funky, a touch jazzy, and even has a little pop thrown in.

THey also reinterpret the hit "Daughters" and make it more of a bluesy ballad! Other highlights include the SRV-ish "Who Did You Think I Was," and great covers of Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow" and Ray Charles' "I Got A Woman." Mayer isn't the second coming of Hendrix or SRV (but C'mon, who is??) but he is the real deal and proves it here!

HAve any of you checked this out yet and if ya did, what do you think?

biggrin Kool record, and this is definitely a good move for Mayer to focus on his playing ability-- two great world-class sidemen(and I heard he's also done a few Herbie Hancock Headhunter shows) to separate him from the Pop-idol thing--as Zappa would say, "shut up and play yer guitar"!

A few years back, JM was giving interviews about how bad he wanted to do a blues trio-type album. Glad he did it and soon thereafter.

He's the real deal. He has great chops, and I think this -- hope this -- will be a big album for him. He deserves it. He might be the kind of the artist you'll see a few decades from now, putting out solid work.

I agree, he looks great. I dig JM. He really seems to care about music and I can hear it when I hear his stuff.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I've checked it out in bits and pieces---musicians in my town are interested in it mainly to check out Pino Palladino...so far I like what I'm hearing and it's going to be a definite stocking stuffer for a couple of my fiends who play guitar or bass....
