What is the best disc to start of a Jimi Hendrix Collection. My dad had about two of his albums but don't kniw what happened to them. He also had Jimi plays Berkley VHS, but it mysteriously vanished also.

So, what are the the best Jimi Hendrix albums or compilations to start off with.

I was thinking of picking up Electric Ladyland first, but I waited a while just to see.

I'd also recommend his live at winterland, live at woodstock and live in the west. A reviewer once said, it was Hendrix's studio work that earned him a reputation, it was his life performances that validated that reputation.

My opinion is that u should DEFINATELY start with "Are You Experienced". It's Jimi's debut and my personal favorite of his. It's when Jimi was burning with passion and his ideas were nonstop. He had all of the major facets; anger, beauty, rage, joy and pain. It's all there in his playing and writing. If u want to hear a genius ahead of his time, this is the album. Bold As Love is beautiful as well, but a little more laid back in vibe. Jimi sounded a little more at peace, so some of the "edge" is gone. The production on Electric Ladyland is fantastic for that time (1968), but Jimi is in "superstar" mode during this, which isn't a bad thing. He was fully aware of his status as a rock star at this point and was still pushing ahead. Which was the great thing about Jimi. But if u want to hear a cat with all the talent in the world and the desire to show it to the world, get with his first album.

i'd agree to stay away from crash landing and midnight lightning because they all have alan douglas's tinkering all over them (for those that don't know, alan douglas replaced all or most of the original backing musicians that were on these tracks with studio musicians, people who hendrix never played with---that's why they're not considered TRUE hendrix recordings), but i do find some enjoyable cuts on war heroes,loose ends and rainbow bridge though. at least it's the man in his natural environment, with the musicians he chose to express himself with.

another must to avoid:: nine to the universe. also, any title that has curtis knight's name on the album cover.

well one reason NOT to get Hendrix in the west is that almost all of it is available on the Jimi hendrix experience box set. I totally agree about Johnny B. Goode, that's like the apex of rock n roll history right there.
