Fiona Apple - any fans?

Just saw Fiona last weekend in concert in LA. great jazzy voice - insightful lyrics - and stage presence. What's great is that after all the contorversy surrounding "Extraordinary Machine" (Sony shleved project initially and then later hired new producers who reworked all but two of the Jon Brion produced songs) I saw Brion at the bar and he was seated in the audience as a fan and supporter of Fiona.

It is good, but see if you can track down the original version.

If Fiona were simply a great singer, she'd deserve her success. The same would be true, if she were simply a great songwriter.

That she's both is why I've been a fan sincer her debut. I hope she progresses beyond the wounded place from which she births her gems. But, gosh, they're consistently captivating, aren't they, those gems?

I totally agree - she is very talented. nod I think hse will progress - seems like she's been around forever but remember she was only 18 when she debuted and she is now still only 28 - young, with lots of time ahead of her. biggrin

I love the new CD - but I am also going to grab a version of the Brion produced tracks if I can - some of the songs seemed better in the original effort.

I've just got back from buying her new album. The first two were tremendous, really looking forward to hearing this one.

I understand this version is a re-recording of the album. Where are the original versions?

Fiona's NYC show this month at the Nokia Theater sold out in less than a minute. Stupid dialup home computer. If I had used the T1 line at work, I would have been able to get a ticket.

They got leaked out on the Internet... Jon Brion produced the first effort - but Sony didn't deem the album "commercial" enough - so they sent her back in the studio with some mainstream producers and reworked all but two of the songs (Brion's versions are bookended at first and last song). Fiona said she is proud of her work with Brion, but also says she felt it was still a work in progress. The title track "Extraordinary Machine" - one of my favorites - is one of Brion's as well. Some say that the Brion produced songs are better - some don't.

If you get the dual disc - on the DVD are performances of some of the songs with Brion on stage in an LA club, Largo. It's excellent.

Thanks for that. Is the dual disc a special edition? may have to wait for that to come on import to the UK - unless you know better!

Wrong.

According to Fiona SHE was the one that wasn't happy with the first version of the album, so she suggested that they bring on Mike Elizondo as the producer. Brion said, "ok", and that was that.

Now Fiona wants both versions available for fans and MIGHT release it.

It's reviewed in the new Q I picked up last night.

Interestingly they recommended downloading just the first four songs.

I'm always right, see. smile
