How Do you Like Your Funk?

Some people are strictly P-Funk, and others prefer any GOOD funk...Do you have a preference? I can appreciate any truly funky jam (P-Funk or not). I used to play in a band with a guy who now plays drums for the Wailers. He grew up in the same community as Jerome "Big Foot" Brailey so he was always partial to the P-Funk and didn't really dig any other funk too much. He thought that the Gap Band & Rick James were "funk-lite". What do y'all think?
We run tings, tings nah run we....

I love 1970s funk such as Parliament and James Brown but the funk I really love is from the early 1980s. This is directly after the so called "death" of disco, so the funk definately has those influences. It's uptempo with a lot less jazz and a lot more dance floor appeal to it. A group like The Barkays is a perfect example. They were around before and after this era. Before disco, their music had a lot more horns, and jazz and blues influences. After disco, the jazz and blues completely left and was replaced with disco and new wave.

I love all funk but the early 1980s is definately my era.

Dirty and Raw.

Some people are in to the disco funk and while i can take it I stick with my theory that there are only two kinds of funk.

Good and Bad

That's the beauty of funk, there is no defining it. There are all different types and genres of funk. U have Parliament Funk, James Funk, Hendrix Funk, Sly Funk, Zapp and Roger Funk, Prince Funk. But you also have Zeppelin Funk, Sabbath Funk, Beatles Funk, Stones Funk, etc.

I like stank and dirty funk. I must have P-Funk, James Brown, Prince, Sly and the Family Stone, Bootsy Collins, Miles Davis, Graham Central Station, and Betty Davis in my funk.

Never try to place FUNK in a box.
I take my FUNK where ever I find it.
And sometimes it can be found in very unlikely places. wink

..I like all of the above..You can find funk pretty much anywhere. Even Trent Reznor has some high tech industrial funk. When I jam with other cats, I like that long, loose, 'on the one' vamp that just lets you stretch out and play.
